Hormone, thyrotropic

In a hyperfunctioning of the thyroid gland, secretion of an excess quantity of thyroid hormones leads to a hyperthyroid condition (Basedow s disease, goiter). In this condition, drags are used that suppress production of thyrotropic hormones in the anterior lobe of the hypophysis (diiodotyrosine), in the thyroid gland (propylthiouracil, methylthiouracil,... [Pg.337]

Diiodotyrosine does not possess pronounced hormonal activity. However, it stops production of thyrotropic hormone by the anterior lobe of the hypophysis, which activates thyroid gland activity. [Pg.340]

Thyrotropic Hormone. This hormone (TSH) stimulates the development of the thyroid and controls its secretion. Although purilied preparations of it have been obtained, they consist of a mixture of proteins of high mean molecular weight (about 30.000). Some of their amino acids have been determined, as well as their carbohydrates, bat the structures have not been elucidated. [Pg.790]

Lithium affects thyroid function (52-56), and in most patients, after 4 months of treatment, there is a transient fall in serum levels of thyroxine (T4) and a rise in thyrotropic hormone (thyroid-stimulating hormone, TSH). After 1 year of treatment, these hormones have generally returned to their baseline. The mechanisms for this are obscure, but lithium inhibits both thyroxine synthesis and its release from the gland (201). Lithium may inhibit endocytosis in the thyroid gland, which results in an accumulation of colloid and thyroglobulin within the follicles, thereby reducing hormone release (202). Thyroid volume... [Pg.66]

The thyrotropic hormone, also called ihyrolnipin and ihy-mid-stimulalmg httnntme (TSH). is a glycoprotein con.sist-ing of two polypeptide chains. This hormone promotes production of thyroid hormones by affecting (he kinetics of the mechanism by which the thyroid concentrates iodide ions from the bloodstream, thereby promoting incorporation of the halogen into the thyroid hormones and release of hormones by the thyroid. [Pg.845]
