Sheep thyroid

Thyroid, USP (or desiccated thyroid) is derived from hog, beef, or sheep thyroid gland. It may be antigenic in allergic or sensitive patients. Inexpensive generic brands may not be bioequivalent. 

Cholestyramine, calcium carbonate, sucralfate, aluminum hydroxide, ferrous sulfate, soybean formula, and dietary fiber supplements may impair the absorption of levothyroxine from the G1 tract. Drugs that increase nondeiodinative T4 clearance include rifampin, carbamazepine, and possibly phenytoin. Amiodarone may block the conversion of T4 to T3. Apart from variations in the response of different animal species to thyrocalcitonin injections or infusions, already described, different species might vary widely in the degree of hypercalcemia necessary to stimulate secretion of thyrocalcitonin. In 1962 Klainer et al. (K4) reported that TSH increased the amount of cyclic AMP in incubated sheep thyroid particulate fractions by 25-35%. Gilman and Rail (Gl) reported that TSH increased the level of cyclic AMP in incubated bovine thyroid slices. Cyclic AMP itself is not a good stimulator of CO2 production from glucose in some thyroid preparations. This may be due to inactivation of cyclic AMP by phosphodiesterase (P6).
