Regardless of the source, the resultant oil slicks are essentially surface phenomena that are affected by several transportation and transformation processes. With respect to transportation, the principal agent for the movement of slicks is the wind, but length scales are important. Whereas small (i.e. relative to the slick size) weather systems, such as thunderstorms, tend to disperse the slick, cyclonic systems can move the slick essentially intact. Advection of a slick is also affected by waves and currents. To a more limited extent, diffusion can also act to transport the oil. [Pg.83]

Thunderstorms (cumulonimbus clouds) come in many sizes and shapes, ranging from small air-mass thunderstorms to large supcrcells. Thunderstorms are influenced by the surrounding atmosphere and nearby convective activity. Sometimes a thunderstorm is composed of a single, isolated cumulonimbus cloud. At other times, cumulonimbus clouds are so numerous that they form a continuous sheet, losing any separate identity. [Pg.89]

The air-mass thunderstorm is the least severe of all thunderstorms. Figure 6.4 displays the result of this statistical analysis for one single thunderstorm. At the location of the laser filaments (arrow head), 43% (3 out of 7) of the pulses are synchronized with the laser repetition rate, corresponding to a high statistical significance (1 — async = 0.987). The delay mismatch between the RF pulses detected on the different LMA detectors correspond to some tens of meters, typical of spatially spread events, such as a series of... [Pg.114]

Similar results have been obtained during the second thunderstorm [31]. In contrast, no effect was observed when the electric field was low or negative.
