Winter/ice storms

Lessons learned CO exposures and poisonings were the most dramatic health concerns in the early aftermath of the ice storm. CO toxicity has been documented as a health concern following winter storms, especially during power outages. Many of the same mechanisms observed in previous outbreaks of CO poisoning (e.g., improper use of gasoline generators and fuel-powered heaters) may have played a role in Maine. 

In October 1997 a fourth dam, this time made of sand and concrete, was constructed. This was a 14-km long and 30-m wide dam [7] that remained until 22nd April 1999. On that date a strong storm raced through Kazakhstan and the combined efforts of waves and winter ice led once more to the dam s break-up. Before the dam s collapse water level was about 42.8 m and by September 1999 the sea level decreased by 2.5 m. In 2003-2005 a fifth dam was built by a Russian company called Zarubezhvodstroy with the financial support of the World Bank. This dam has been in operation since August 2005 and we have observed a steady increase of sea level since that time [3,6]. 

Storms that occur only in the winter are known as blizzards or ice storms. A blizzard is a storm with strong winds, blowing snow and frigid temperatures. An ice storm consists of falling rain that freezes when it strikes the ground, covering everything with a layer of ice.

Sometimes the Kuban delta is subject to flooding due to storm surges and ice dams. Significant inundation induced by storm surge was recorded in October 1969, when water level rise at the town of Temryuk at a distance of 7 km from the sea exceeded 3 m [5]. The last large inundation due to ice dam was observed in winter 2003.

A major winter storm can be lethal. Winter storms bring ice, snow, cold temperatures, and often dangerous driving conditions. Even small amounts of snow and ice can cause severe problems for southern states where storms are infrequent (see Figure 17.5). 

Off the coast of Nova Scotia, ice on Northumberland Strait has been so thin and unstable during the past few winters that thousands of gray seals crawled on unaccustomed islands to give birth. Storms and high tides washed 1500 newborn seal pups out to sea last year.
