Three-cylinder design

A chlorine cylinder design includes three fuse plugs (which melt at 165° F or 74° C) in each end. The heat from steam reportedly melted the plugs and the chlorine escaped through 3/8-inch (0.9 cm) diameter orifices. (See Chapter 3 for details.) Actuators for control valves come in three basic designs pneumatic, electric, and hydraulic. Pneumatic actuators, which convert air pressure to mechanical energy, use three designs diaphragm, piston, and vane. Electrically operated actuators convert electricity to mechanical energy. Common examples include solenoid valves and motor-driven actuators. Hydraulically operated actuators convert liquid pressure to mechanical energy. Two of the machines will operate full-time the third will serve as a standby. For such a situation, the suction header would be sized for the suction capacity of two machines. In practice, it may be better to run all three machines at reduced speed. Then when one comes down for some reason, the other two can speed up to carry the full load. As mentioned by Mathias et al. [9], reliable methods to measure the thermal conductivity of diffusion layers as a function of compression pressures are very scarce in the open literature. Khandelwal and Mench [112] designed an ex situ method to measure accurately the thermal conductivities of different components used in a fuel cell. In their apparatus, the sample materials were placed between two cylindrical rods made out of aluminum bronze (see Figure 4.28). Three thermocouples were located equidistantly in each of the upper and lower cylinders to monitor the temperatures along these components. Two plates located at each end compressed both cylinders together. The temperatures of each plate were maintained by flowing coolant fluids at a high flow rate through channels located inside each of the plates. A load cell was located between two plates at one end so that the compression pressure could be measured. [Pg.274]

The binding change mechanism for the trimeric Fi component resembles the action of a Wankle (or rotary) engine used in some automobiles.
