Thermoplastic polyurethane coating

The Hquid monomers are suitable for bulk polymerization processes. The reaction can be conducted in a mold (casting, reaction injection mol ding), continuously on a conveyor (block and panel foam production), or in an extmder (thermoplastic polyurethane elastomers and engineering thermoplastics). Also, spraying of the monomers onto the surface of suitable substrates provides insulation barriers or cross-linked coatings. 

Global consumption of thermoplastic mbbers of all types is estimated at about 600,000 t/yr (51). Of this, 42% was estimated to be consumed in the United States, 39% in Western Europe, and 19% in Japan. At present, the woddwide market is estimated to be divided as follows styrenic block copolymers, 48% hard polymer/elastomer combinations, 26% thermoplastic polyurethanes, 12% thermoplastic polyesters, 4% and others, 9%. The three largest end uses were transportation, 23% footwear, 18% and adhesives, coatings, etc, 16%. The ranges of the hardness values, prices, and specific gravities of commercially available materials are given in Table 4. 

Polyurethanes are used in a wide variety of applications, seals, metal forming dies, liners, coupling elements, rollers, wheels and conveyor belts being examples. The thermoplastic polyurethanes are used as cable jacketing materials, conduits, fabric coatings, in ski boots and other rigid boot soles, automotive body components, gear wheels and other business machine parts. 

Thermoplastic polyurethane resins were also prepared by the author [2] from 4,4 -methylene diphenylisocyanate with poly(3,3-bis-(2,2,3,3,4,4,4-hepta-fluorobutoxymethyl)-co-3-(2,2,3,3,4,4,4-heptafluorobutoxymethyl)-3-methy-loxetane) using dibutyltin dilaurate as catalyst and used in low surface energy coating applications... 

In coating applications, urethane chemistry is used to cross-link coatings and also to prepare thermoplastic polyurethanes or isocyanate-terminated pre-polymers.

Polybutadiene diols and hydrogenated polybutadiene diols are used for producing thermoplastic polyurethane elastomers, hydrolytically stable PU elastomers, adhesives, sealants, coatings, encapsulation and electrical insulation polyurethanic products.

OTHER COMMENTS useful in bonding rubber to rayon and nylon used in two-component polyurethane coating systems used for aircraft, tank trucks, and truck trailers also used to produce polyurethane lacquer coatings applied to certain automobile body components other uses are in production of thermoplastic polyurethane resins and spandex fibers. 

Thermoplastic polyurethanes exhibit good abrasion and mar resistance. They are stable to attack by oxygen and hydrocarbons, but are sensitive to moisture and acidic and basic solutions, which can result in hydrolytic chain scission. They are used as coatings and adhesives and in footwear and automotive parts. 

Under development are coatings based on thermoplastic processing such as thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU). The future will show whether PU coatings are competitive in joining, durability, translucency and economy compared to PVC or PTFE ones.

Polyurethanes are very versatile polymers. They are used as flexible and rigid foams, elastomers, and coatings. Polyurethanes are available as both thermosets and thermoplastics. In addition, their hardnesses span the range from rigid material to elastomer. Thermoplastic polyurethanes will be the focus of this section. The term polyurethane is used to cover materials formed from the reaction of isocyanates and polyols. The general reaction for a polyurethane produced through the reaction of a diisocyanate with a diol is shown in Fig. 2.35. 

Thermoplastic polyurethane elastomers are polymers that bridge the gap between rubbers and plastics. They can be used in a wide range of properties, from hard rubbers to soft engineering thermoplastics as they are elastic and melt-processable. They can be processed on extrusion as well as injection, blow and compression molding equipment. They can be vacuum-formed or solution-coated and are suited for a wide variety of fabrication methodologies. They provide a considerable number of physical property combinations high resilience, good compression set, resistance to abrasions, tears, impacts, weather, and even hydrocarbons. Such materials... 

Such cements are applied to adherend and allowed to dry to the desired degree of tackiness before contacting the adherend coated surfaces. Or, as in the case of the crystallizing thermoplastic polyurethane resins, the adhesive coating may be allowed to fully dry and crystallize. Subsequent heat activation of the coated adherend surfaces, then in contact with each other, rapidly produces a strong bond.
