Thermoplastic acrylic resin

Aircraft coatings normally consist of two coats. The topcoat used for civil aircraft is a high-gloss two-pack polyurethane product, cured with aliphatic isocyanates. Single-coat systems based on thermoplastic acrylic resins have been used for military aircraft, but are being replaced by polyurethane topcoats [11.10]. [Pg.252]

Commercial acrylic resins comprise a broad array of polymers and copolymers derived from esters of acrylic acid and methacrylic acid. They range from the homopolymer of methyl methacrylate to a variety of copolymers including both the thermoplastic and thermoset type and ranging from hard and stiff types to soft and elastomeric types. The most common of the thermoplastic acrylic resins are the poly(methyl methacrylate) homopolymer (PMMA) and the copolymers containing predominantly methyl methacrylate but with small amounts of methyl or ethyl acrylate, acrylonitrile, or styrene comonomers added for improved toughness. [Pg.1785]

Extensional flow can also be encountered in spray application. If, for example, a solution of a thermoplastic acrylic resin with above about 100,000 is sprayed,... [Pg.1413]

Clearly the variety of uses to which thermoplastic acrylic resins (TPA) are put, has meant that many polymers have been formulated to meet the demands of particular applications. In most instances, where TPA s are used, they are the major, or even sole binder component. A good understanding of acrylic polymer technology is therefore essential for optimum resin choice. [Pg.180]

By definition, thermoplastic acrylic resins are film formers in their own right, and their film properties are governed by monomer selection, molecular weight and molecular weight distribution. [Pg.180]

The future of thermoplastic acrylic resins in this market is limited due to the increasing focus on waterborne polymers and environmental regulations. Volatile organic conqmund (VOC) levels of below around 450 g/1 are not achievable at afi lication viscosity with current thermoplastic acrylic resin technology. It is expected that there will be increasing substitution by water borne products. [Pg.210]

The use of thermoplastic acrylics in high build, heavy duty anti-corrosive systems is reported by Steed who describes top coat formulations based on thermoplastic acrylic resins, chlorinated rubber, solution vinyl resins as well as blends of two or more of these. [Pg.212]

Premix water and the additives. Then add to the resin with stirring. Primal WL-81 (Rohm and Haas) is an aqueous thermoplastic acrylic resin, 41.5% nvc with an MFFT of 57 C. It does not contain co-solvents, which maximises formulating latitude. It can be crosslinked with monomeric methoxy melamines, e.g. Cymel 303, to give harder, more resistant films. [Pg.426]
