Currently companies are increasingly recognizing not only the economic value of green chemistry, but also the societal and environmental benefits, that is, the triple bottom line. Sustainability has become a key driver for many chemical companies (2).

Sustainability is generally considered as covering three dimensions addressing the impacts on the environment, the impacts on society and central stakeholders, and the impacts on the economy of the manufacturer, as represented in the concept of the triple bottom line. 

It is eye opening to the wastefulness of most chemical procedures. It also helps to better understand why certain syntheses of drugs, for example, don t make it to large-scale production as a result of its effect on the triple bottom line. 

In planning, this translates into optimization of three sets of objectives simultaneously, as often depicted in Figure 2.2 (left) and summarized in terms of the interrelated dimensions of people, planet, and profit, sometimes referred to as the triple bottom line (Elkington, 1998).
