In The Red Balloon, the young hero is slight but wiry, with an elfin, dreamer s face. We first see him as a very small figure in a very large square, dominated by massive stone houses. His outsized briefcase reminds us of the sort of small humiliations unfeeling adults can visit on children. In addition, it lends the boy a somewhat comical air. The balloon, of course, is red— the color of blood, the color of life, the color of trouble. In the context of the film, it is not only the main character s friend but his double, his secret self. [Pg.23]

As you go about your day, try to take note of any incongruous details of people s clothing the handsome silk blouse with a button missing, the well-tailored business suit worn with scuffed shoes, the street person with a jaunty hat, the workman in ironed blue jeans. (Remember the man-sized briefcase toted by the small boy in The Red Balloon while it doesn t tell us about his character, it certainly informs us about his situation.) On the other hand, if the character s appearance is "perfect," as is Louise s in the excerpt above from Thelma and Louise, that too is useful information. [Pg.44]

The catalyst is the incident that calls the protagonist s dramatic action to life. It is sometimes called "the inciting incident," e.g., the little boy rescuing the magical balloon in The Red Balloon, or the breaking of the rope as the hero is about to be hung in Incident at Owl Creek Bridge. [Pg.48]

Another approach is to examine what humor, rather than a more straightforward approach, will add to the story. The humor, aside from its understandable appeal, should bring other narrative dividends. For example, the fact that the balloon in The Red Balloon does the unexpected (it follows the boy and later displays a mind of its own) is humorous, but it also humanizes the balloon. Through humor, the balloon becomes the boy s friend rather than remaining an inanimate object. [Pg.116]

Perhaps the most challenging dimension for the writer is to create a character who is both an individual and an archetype. At what point does the little boy in The Red Balloon become every little boy At what point do the two men who carry the wardrobe in Two Men and a Wardrobe become everyman In both films the repetitive behavior of the characters is excellent habitual signage, but we have to turn to the plots to illustrate how the archetype is... [Pg.136]

Recent evidence suggests that atherosclerosis is a chronic inflammatory process. The recruitment of mononuclear leukocytes and formation of intimal macrophage-rich lesions at specific sites of the arterial tree are key events in atherogenesis. The antioxidant-mediated inhibition of nuclear factor k B (NFkB) and the subsequent non selective reduction of cytokine transcription have been suggested to be responsible for these effects [83]. Additionally, quercetin downregulated both phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate (PMA)- and tumour necrosis factor-a (TNFa)-induced intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) expression in human endothelial cells [86]. [Pg.580]
