The Changing Scene

Trace Evidence. Trace evidence (23) refers to minute, sometimes microscopic material found during the examination of a crime scene or a victim s or suspect s clothing (see Trace AND residue analysis). Trace evidence often helps poHce investigators (24) develop connections between suspect and victim and the crime scene. The theory behind trace evidence was first articulated by a French forensic scientist the Locard Exchange Principle notes that it is not possible to enter a location, such as a room, without changing the environment. An individual brings trace materials into the area and takes trace materials away. The challenge to the forensic scientist is to locate, collect, preserve, and characterize the trace evidence. 

Two inventions in the 1740s changed the electrical scene dramatically. One was the frictional machine, which made it possible to generate continuous streams of electricity relatively easily the other was the condenser, or Leyden jar, which made possible the storage and sudden discharge of substantial quantities of electric charge. 

The interest, economics and changing tastes together indicated the most important phenomenon, which pushed cocktails into center stage—the acceptance by women of cocktail drinking as a social form, and a new equality of enjoyment in going out. The cocktail scene, as opposed to the bar scene, was sexually comfortable and independent—mutually neutral territory where a group of any description could spend a few hours or an evening over a few conversation-piece drinks or a few favorites. 

As a result of both developments, the use of automatic control systems has strongly increased. This, in turn, has led to a more widespread use of sensors -not only the traditional low-cost sensors, but a whole host of new sensors that have been introduced - and even more are still being developed. Our book therefore wants to give an insight into the rapidly changing scene and explain what sensors are introduced into appliances for what purpose. 

These studies seek to identify ways in which the processing and handling system can be streamlined, with added value to the cotton growers product and added profit for textile mills. The textile scene has changed during recent decades (Table I) and... 

Drug-dependence clinics need to develop full assessment procedures and be very familiar with the changing local drug scenes so that needs can be identified early and met. Knowledge of other local services provided by both statutory and voluntary bodies is essential to avoid duplication of services and to link the facilities available. If possible the size and nature of the local drug problem should be ascertained. Surveys in East Dorset have been used to involve probation and social services and to emphasise the important needs of comprehensive school children (Pritchard et al. 1985,1986). 

The next few years are likely to see considerable changes in the drug scene and in drug services, as agencies (and government departments) work out their responses to issues such as harm reduction, prescribing, and AIDS/HIV, particularly in the light of the recommendations of... 

ANTIBIOTICS CHLORAMPHENICOL AND ANALOGUES. Chloramphenicol (1. R = N02), CnH CLNjOs, is a commercially significant antibacterial agent and its status in clinical practice has been reviewed. Although widespread use of this antibiotic declined in the United States in the 1960s because of reports of serious toxic effects, this situation changed a decade later when ampicillin-resistant Hemophilus influenzae emerged on the clinical scene. The appearance of Bacteroides species and of Streptococcus pneumoniae resistant to /1-lactam antibiotics contributed further to... 

The technical scene could hardly have changed more. While purification and structural determinations still feature in major areas of research (see Campbell, 1996 Dwek, 1996), analyses of all sorts, often fully automated, are now performed on pg (or smaller) amounts of material. In many cases the existence of hitherto unsuspected proteins is indicated by DNA sequencing.

Once again, the first scenes of an act take place in the street, and their unity of action is the subplot of Sir Politic. Sir Pol is mocked in this sequence as the typical English tourist. It would still be a good joke in the England of today. The English never seem to change their native habits when they travel abroad. 

It may be useful to set the scene for our analysis of the chemical industry s current situation and future challenges by taking a brief look at its evolution, and, in particular, by outlining our understanding of the changes in general industry dynamics in the various chemical businesses over the past decades and up to the present day.
