Poly(ethylene terephthalate), the predominant commercial polyester, has been sold under trademark names including Dacron (Du Pont), Terylene (ICI), Eortrel (Wellman), Trevira (Hoechst-Celanese), and others (17). Polybenzimidazole (PBI) Fibers. Poly(2,2 -(y -phenylene)-5,5 -bisbenzimidazole) [25734-65-0] is a textile fiber marketed by Hoechst-Celanese (11) which does not form Hquid crystalline solutions due to its bent meta backbone monomeric component. PBI has exceUent resistance to high temperature and chemicals. [Pg.67]

Poly(ethylene terephthalate). PET is a crystalline material and hence difficult to plasticize. Additionally, since PET is used as a high strength film and textile fiber, plasticization is not usually required although esters showing plasticizing properties with PVC may be used in small amounts as processing aids and external lubricants. Special mention must be made of poly(lactic acid), a biodegradable/bio-resorbable polyester, obtained from renewable resources through fermentation of com starch sugar. New trends involve the use of nanoparticles in synthetic fibers. Polymer-layered silicates, nanotubes, and POSS have been successfully introduced in a number of textile fibers, mainly poly-amide-6, polypropylene, and polyester. Although they reduce the flammability of these fibers, but on their own are not effective enough to confer flame retardancy to a specified level. However, in presence of small amounts of selected conventional FRs (5-10 wt %), synergistic effect can be achieved. With this approach fibers having multifunctional properties can also be obtained, e.g., water repellency or antistatic properties along with fire retardancy. High performance polymer fibers (HPPF) have excellent mechanical properties compared to traditional textile fibers such as nylon. The typical HPPFs are aramid and polyethylene fibers (6). Aramid is a generic name for a class of aromatic polyamide fibers, most of which are varieties of poly(p-pheny-lene terephthalamide). Kevlar is the trade name of the varieties of aramid polymers introduced conunercially by Dupont. The molecules in the fibers of these materials are oriented in the axial direction. More than 2 million tons of poly(ethylene terephthalate), commonly referred to as PET or PETE, are produced in the United States each year for use in beverage bottles, apparel, tire cord, film for photography, food packi ing, coatings for microwave and conventional ovens, and home furnishings.
