The most common equipment for cleaning recirculated air from particles is fabric filters, mechanical collectors, electrostatic precipitators, and cleaners and wet collectors.For cleaning of recirculated air from gases, absorbers and adsorbers such as activated carbon, sometimes with impregnation for specific gases, and impregnated alumina are most common. The performance of different air cleaning equipment is described in many textbooks and handbooks.

The selection of pumps for liquids is discussed in Chapter 5. Descriptions of most of the types of pumps used in the chemical process industries are given in Volume 1, Chapter 8. Several textbooks and handbooks have also been published on this subject Garay (1997), Karassik (2001) and Parmley (2000).

When we need the properties of a chemical compound, such as the boiling point of benzene, the fastest and least expensive method is a forward search from the structure to the properties by consulting a database. The sources of such experimental information are first published in primary research journals, and then pass through professional editors and panels to make their way to secondary textbooks and handbooks. 

This should be a useful text for a junior or senior collegiate materials engineering student, endeavoring to learn about this topic for the first time, or corporate R D personnel, attempting to decipher what all the bells and whistles of their new, quite expensive, instrument will do for them. By basing this treatment on the elementary physical chemistry, heat transfer, materials properties, and device engineering used in thermal analysis, it is my hope that what follows will be a useful textbook and handbook, and that the information presented will remain current well into the future. 

Basic science in the general field of macromolecules includes the principles of their synthesis the investigation of the size and structure of individual molecules in solution, and the relationship between structure and properties in the bulk phase. Approximately 450 scientists in 90 laboratories all over the world devote the major portion of their time to basic science in the subject field. The results of their work are published in about 150 technical journals which include literature on plastics. Reviewing the literature at present is difficult. The author suggests services which include a weekly news letter, monthly journal for papers, semiannual journal for review articles, and formula and data sheets in addition to regularly appearing monographs, textbooks, and handbooks. 

In addition there will be monographs, textbooks, and handbooks written by specialists in the field as the progress in polymer science and the demand for comprehensive documentation and information justify their publication. 

Fundamentals, applications and experimental details of both infrared and Raman spectroscopy are treated in numerous textbooks and handbooks [149-157] thus only a few general details of these spectroscopies, which are of particular importance for applications in electrochemistry, are treated here.
