A second explosion occurred in a chemical plant in Texas City, Texas, some years later, and this was called the Texas City Disaster 11. This explosion occurred when a distillation column used to purify butadiene from other C4 hydrocarbons was operating improperly and... [Pg.434]

In experimental work conducted at the Bur of Mines after the Texas City disaster, it was shown that pure AN can be initiated when heated between 277 and 334°, FGAN at 114 to 350° and a mixture of FGAN and bag paper at 134 to 153 when under confinement... [Pg.327]

The sensitivity of AN to heat is always increased by the presence of.organic compounds, provided that the proportions of these do not exceed certain limits. Among the substances investigated are cellulose, paper, pulverized carbon, soot, sawdust, waxes, paraffin, TNT, NS, DNT and drip oil. For instance, the presence of 5% NS in AN increased the sensitivity to such an extent that the mixture detond when heated to about 150°. The presence of paper bags such as the containers for FGAN was a contributing factor to the Texas City disaster in 1947. [Pg.328]

Following are the results of some tests conducted for the US Govt (after Texas City disaster) in order to determine the, safety factors of AN a) 100° Heat Test 0.74% loss in wt in the first 48 hrs, 0.13% loss in the 2nd 48 hrs and no explo sion in 100 hrs... [Pg.333]

The Texas City Disaster is generally considered to be one of the most significant industrial accidents in US history. The following provides a brief summary of the event. [Pg.2553]

There was neither a full-scale emergency response plan nor a tug boat to tow the dangerously burning Grandcamp away from the port. A little after 9.00 a.m., the Texas City Disaster (as it is popularly known) occurred as the ship Grandcamp exploded. A great column of smoke shot up to an estimated 2000 ft, followed in 10s, by another even more violent shockwave. Within minutes of the second blast, the Monsanto Chemical Plant was in flames that resulted from broken lines and shattered containers. Entire buildings collapsed and people were trapped inside. Fire spread to the refineries that made up the Texas City industrial complex. [Pg.2553]

The lessons learned from the Texas City Disaster event from health and safety viewpoint are ... [Pg.2554]
