An additional series of process tests and plots can be helpful. The Delta-P over each section should be monitored and the reflux increased/decreased at constant bottom temperature. The composition of the heavy key in the overhead should be monitored. Plots should then be made of both Delta-P and of composition vs. reflux. Most manuals supplied by chromatograph manufacturers provide instructions for proper maintenance and troubleshooting. When checking the detector, it is advisable to use a sample that will not be adsorbed by the column, such as a hydrocarbon. For electron capture detectors a suitable test substance would be a halo-carbon, rather than a sensitive chlorinated pesticide. 

The other development related to troubleshooting of defects to provide guidance to test and debug start-up and also solve problems in operations that had been running well. These defects are considered qualitative in nature, because the machine cannot detect them, but needs operator judgement. The system forces the operator to define the problem in terms of occurrence (such as in one cavity), nonoccurrence (not in other symmetrical location), where did it occur (near the gate, etc.), and when it occurs (from time to time). 

An independent contractor responsible to the construction manager or owner should do testing and balancing (TAB) of mechanical systems. All start-up should be complete and initial valve or damper settings made (and recorded) by the subcontractor before testing and balancing begins. The TAB contractor should not have to repair equipment or troubleshoot inoperative equipment but rather only adjust and verify performance of equipment.
