Polyhydroxy-p-terphenyls

Many natural polyhydroxy-p-terphenyls have also been obtained by total or partial synthesis. The cited reviews of Gill and Steglich [1, 8] include a number of early synthetic methods and related references. For the sake of brevity, we report here only some general schemes. 

Globally considered, the data here reported confirm the important properties of this peculiar group of metabolites and open promising perspectives in the search for further natural polyhydroxy-p-terphenyls and new synthetic methods, as well as for structure-activity relationship and safety studies.

A total synthesis of the pyrazine alkaloid Botryllazine B from the red ascidian Botryllus leachi was accomplished, and a previously proposed structure was shown to be correct <04M333>. Also in the natural product arena, six new polyhydroxy-p-terphenyl pyrazinediol dioxide conjugates 98a-c and 99a-c related to sarcodonin were isolated from the fruiting bodies of the basidiomycete Sarcodon leucopus <04EJO592>.
