The recent availability of oral formulations of 5-FU, may provide not only an improvement in the ease of administration and the efficacy of fluoropyrimidine therapy, but also alleviate complications related to the catheters. Such agents include uracil tegafur (UFT) and capecitabine (Xeloda).

Fluorouracil and its derivatives are still important dmgs in the chemotherapy of numerous cancers (doxifluridine, tegafur, carmofur) (cf. Chapter 8). Oral formulations of 5-FU would allow a protracted exposure without the need for a central venous catheter or costly infusion pump. However oral 5-FU is unreliably absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, leading to incomplete and erratic bioavailability. This has led to the development of oral prodrugs of 5-FU such as capecitabine (Hoff, 2003) and uracil/tegafur (UFT).

FT-Raman is another technique by which quick and easy identity testing can be performed. A FT-Raman method has been developed to identify the two active components (tegafur and uracil) in formulated capsules (48). Figure 5 displays a spectral region where Raman bands unique to uracil and tegafur can be found in the FT-Raman spectrum of an intact capsule.
