In 1972 Du Pont introduced Teflon PFA, a copolymer of tetrafluoroethylene and perfluorofpropyl vinyl ether) (CF2 = CFOCF2CF2CF3). Similar materials are now also produeed by Asahi Glass, Daikin, Hoechst and Monteflos and are commonly referred to as PFA fluoropolymers. FIFE was first commercialized by DuPont, under the brand name Teflon. PTFE is a very highly crystalline polymer, extremely inert, an excellent barrier, and exhibits a very low coefficient of friction. Its glass transition temperature (Tg) is about -100°C, and its melt temperature is about 327 C (621°F). Flowever, its very high viscosity makes it very difficult to process. This difference in bundle wetting at different laminating pressures was demonstrated by placing polished edges of a series of Teflon laminates, prepared at temperatures from 500-700°F, in a penetrant dye solution for 20 min. At the end of this time, the laminates were removed from the solution and wiped dry. The extent of lateral penetration of the dye into the laminate was measured and found to be a function of the laminating temperature.
