Tedania

Doridosine. Doridosine, AJ -methyhsoguanosine, (35) was isolated from the dorid nudibranchs of Anisodoris nobilis and the sponge, Tedania (106,107). The injection of (35) into the saphenous vein of anesthetized rats produces hypotension and bradycardia almost immediately. The observed changes in the electrocardiograms are minor and indicate Httie interference with conduction of the impulse within the heart (see Cardiovascularagents).

In 1991, Dillman and Cardellina reported the isolation of 1-methylcarbazole (384) from extracts of the sponge Tedania ignis collected in the shallow waters of Bermuda (350). This was the first report on the isolation of 1-methylcarbazole from a marine invertebrate (350). Prior to this isolation, 1-methylcarbazole was detected, along with other methylcarbazole derivatives as major components of cigarette smoke condensate (351). This isolate showed insecticidal and antimicrobial activity (352), but was shown to be non-mutagenic (353).

The diketopiperazine cycZo-(L-proline-L-thioproline) (498) was isolated from Tedania ignis but a bacterial origin for the metabolite was suggested [423]. Cyc/o-(L-proline-L-methionine) (499) was isolated from Pseudomonas aeruginosa associated with the Antarctic sponge, Isodictya setifera. The structure was elucidated by spectroscopic methods and confirmed through synthesis [424],... 

The thiol group can also be found in heterocyclic compounds such as 2-mercaptobenzothiazole (9) and echinoclathrine C (10). Compound 9 was isolated from the symbiont bacterium Micrococcus sp., which was obtained from the sponge Tedania ignis [13]. The pyridine alkaloid echinoclathrine C (10) and its S-acetylated derivative, echinoclathrine B (11), were isolated from the Okinawan sponge Echinoclathria sp. [14]. The position of the hydroxyl and acylamino group on the phenyl ring in echinoclathrines (11 and 10) was recently corrected [15]. Compound 11 showed weak immunosuppressive activity in the mixed lymphocyte reaction assay with an IC50 of 9.7 pg/ml [14].

Natural products containing pyrazole rings are practically nonexistent. It seems that the evolution of organisms has produced few enzymes capable of forming an N-N bond. However, a methanol extract of the sponge Tedania anhelans yielded the two unusual heteroaromatic acids, pyrazole-3(5)-carboxylic acid 905 and 4-methylpyrazole-3(5)-car-boxylic acid 906, which are reported for the first time as natural products <1997JNP802>.
