Technology, Science and the Economy

In this chapter I start with an examination of two UK government White Papers on science and technology, one produced in 1993 by a Conservative Government (DTI, 1993) and the other in 2000 by a Labour Government (DTI, [Pg.37]

Both see technological development as an outcome of science and as essential for economic prosperity. I then critically examine the supposed relationships between science and technology and between technology and the economy. This leads first to an account of what science is and second to a critique of the priority given to the economy by government policy. [Pg.37]

The 1993 White Paper Realising our potential A strategy for science, engineering and technology (DTI, 1993) linked science and technology with free trade and prosperity the prosperity of the UK, it claimed, has been based on free markets and on the application of science to tradable products (paragraph 1.2). This is even more the case today  [Pg.37]

The United Kingdoms competitive position rests increasingly on our capacity to trade in goods and services incorporating or produced by the latest science and technology. (DTI, 1993, paragraph 1.14) [Pg.37]

In keeping with the Conservative Governments desire to minimize the role of government, the White Paper emphasized private funding of science (paragraph 2.20), but also that there should be greater links between industry and the scientific expertise of British Universities  [Pg.38]
