Technology brokering

Education is a key component of technology transfer because of the need for those transferring the technology to provide background on their products to those at the user level. Often the developer will need to work with the industry on the actual application of the technology to the particular problem or process that the user seeks to apply it to. In recent years there has been an increase in technology brokers and those who are intermediaries in the transfer of technology. 

During the discussion after the Industry Perspectives session (Chapter 2), Daniel Nocera of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology highlighted the need for an honest broker. He thinks that scientists can be honest brokers but asked the group to identify an organization that could be an effective, honest broker to guide scientists toward strategic investment.

The Federal Laboratory Consortium for Technology Transfer is an active, growing organization of R D laboratories and centers whose members are committed to efforts to speed the flow of R D results from the Laboratory to the marketplace. The FLC members seem to function most effectively as brokers, serving as face-to-face contact points between the Technology resources and the users.

Section on university-industry cooperation discusses three model relationships the Pulp and Paper Research Institute of Canada and McGill University, the Center for Cold Ocean Resources Engineering and Memorial University in St. John s, and the research brokering functions of the Industrial Research Institutes, and the Centres for Advanced Technology—both created by the Federal Department of Industry, Trade, and Commerce. The Object Management Group, a consortium of object technology vendors founded in 1989, created a technology specification named CORBA (Common Object Request Broker Architecture). CORBA employs an abstraction similar to that of RPC, with a slight modification that simplifies programming and maintenance and increases extensibility of products. 

Real estate brokers are typically tied into a multiple-listing service that lists all available property in an area. Many agencies also employ state-of-the-art technology so prospective buyers can see many views of a particular site without leaving the broker s office. Be careful to select a broker comfortable with industrial site searches many advertise commercial expertise, but industrial requirements are different from generic commercial ones, especially insofar as environmental regulations. Remember that brokers are compensated only for successful transactions, and hard-sell approaches may or may not create pressure for the selection team.
