Technological elements

From the inception of the Lagow Laboratory in 1969 in the Department of Chemistry at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, elemental fluorine reactions (direct fluorination) were generally conducted on a 5-20 g scale. It was still not clear that it would be possible to scale up the reaction of elemental fluorine into a commercial process. 

Fungicides cannot be developed and tested in isolation from the other technological elements in a wheat production system. Where researchers have discovered an effective new fungicide and then sprayed it on test plots without regard to the whole system, they have failed miserably. A chemical company several years ago attempted to do that with a product that had been effective in Europe. They sprayed wheat from Florida to New York, spent several million dollars, and went home totally disenchanted. They ignored the fact that fungicides are a part of a complex system that involves more than merely spraying a chemical on a crop.
