Often, the walkthrough and analysis of the process flow sheets lead to an early identification of P2 and waste-reduction opportunities. By studying the process flow sheets and information gathered from the walkthrough, and by conducting brainstorming sessions with team members, the team will be able to identify sources... 

In other words, our primary focus is on waste- and pollution-reduction opportunities if these could reduce energy consumption as well, all the better. If energy usage is a particularly prominent factor, then the team should recommend a separate energy audit. 

Step 9.3 Reconcile Wastewater Flows. The sum of the wastewater generated from each unit operation should be approximately the same as the input to the process. If its not, then there are possible sources of error in your accounting. The inability to reconcile water flows is a good tip-off to P2 opportunities. To make sure it doesn t miss such an opportunity, the team should focus attention on accurate reconciliation of the inputs and outputs. 

As you will see, a team approach is probably the most effective way to do this teamwork provides both a reasonable division of labor and the opportunity to draw on a range of the disciplines that contribute to PSM.

Either way, both senior management and line persoimel should have the opportunity to review the PSM plan and discuss it with the team. As a general rule, the more input and commentary you can incorporate into the finished product, the better its chances of approval—and of successful implementation—since it will reflect the interests of the people affected by it. 

A good candidate for selection as a pilot site would offer opportunities in each of these categories. Once you have identified several possibilities, ask the team to consider the benefits of each ... 

The dotted lines in the diagram indicate the various feedback paths that exist to enable the individual to identify if a particular stage of the processing chain was executed correctly. Thus, if the operating team had planned a strategy to handle a complex plant problem, they would eventually obtain feedback with regard to whether or not the plan was successful. Similar feedback loops exist at the rule and skill-based levels, and indicate opportunities for error correction. The application of the stepladder model to a process industry example is given in Appendix 2A at the end of this chapter. 

Started. Since pump A and its associated pipework was off-line, the supervisor took the opportunity to carry out scheduled maintenance on the pressure relief valve (PRV) downstream of pump A. The valve had been malfunctioning, and although the work was not scheduled to be done for some weeks, the specialist contractor team who maintain the PRVs had a team available to carry out the work immediately. The supervisor therefore now had two teams working on the pump A systems the shift maintenance team working on the pump itself, and a two-man contractor team working on the PRV and its associated pipework. The PRV for pump A is not located immediately adjacent to the pump, and is above floor level, close to a number of other pipe runs. The following description represents a hypothetical sequence of events based on the inquiry findings, but embellished for the purposes of the case study. 

You can also use the pilot study to provide a training ground for the integration team, with care to avoid overwhelming the subject department with the whole integration team. It is unlikely that you can fmd realistic opportunities to involve the whole team directly. But you may be able to... 

At UOP, Ipatieff had the opportunity to apply his former research in catalytic promoters and high-pressure technique to develop important catalytic petroleum processing technologies. In contrast to the way he conducted science, Ipatieff s technical efforts were conducted in teams comprised of a wide assortment of specialists.

Once the team is assembled, it is important to have a "kick-off" or pre-design meeting so that each representative is given the opportunity to present their needs and requirements.
