Additional data fields provide direct bibliographic links (using the Digital Object Identifier, DOI, format [14]) to PDF files for aU literature entries, and SwissProt [15] reference IDs for most targets. The SwissProt ID, in particular, can be challenging. 

The Digital Object Identifier (DOI) is a system for identifying and exchanging intellectual property in the digital environment (http //www.doi.org/). 

The website accompanying this book, www.catalysisbook.org, features additional teaching material (exercises, answers, and lecture slides). It also contains a searchable list of the all the references, each with its corresponding digital object identifier (DOI) hyperlink. Access to this website is free of charge. 

The other major source for student acquisition of PDF files is the primary literature in the form of journals. The modern electronic journal functions in much the same way as a content management system. Retrieval of individual articles has been vastly expedited by the recent introduction of the widely implemented digital-object-identifier (DOI) [4]. This provides 1-click access by means of a hyperlink embedded directly in other documents, or from e.g. the navigation tree of a HTML-based Web document. Although ostensibly introduced to provide rapid access to the published scientific literature, the DOI identifier is also the first of the technologies discussed here that has the potential to achieve the holistic and interlinked information structures implied in the title of this article.

One flaw of this scheme is that identical documents served from multiple sites have different URLs. Also, URLs leading to the same document can become different if the server host has more than one name, or file system links are modifying the directory structure of the server. An alternative to the URL scheme called URN (uniform resource names ) is currently being discussed. A URN is an unique identifier of a document similar to an ISBN number, making copies and different versions of documents identifiable. The latest proposal in this area, backed by many scientific publishers, is the DOI (digital object identifier). 

HTTP URIs are considered inherently unreliable by many users because of their experience with broken web-page links and their ease of creation. It takes a conscious action on the part of administrators to implement LSIDs and this instils a sense of importance to their maintenance. A similar motivation is given for the adoption of digital object identifiers (DOIs) by the publishing community. DOIs have a similar resolution mechanisms to LSIDs using either an HTTP URI proxy or the Handle System .
