Groups of Related Elements

Chapters 1-4 provide the characteristics of the separation and preconcentration methods solvent extraction, flotation, coprecipitation with collectors, volatilization, ion exchange etc. These chapters deal also with the fundamentals of spectrophotometry, spectrophotometric methods of analysis, and most important chromogenic reagents. Chapters 5-57 have been devoted to individual elements or groups of related elements.

Two groups of chemical elements can be considered related to their distribution in soil profiles. The first group includes the essential nutrients actively absorbed by vegetation and relatively tightly bound in soil organic matter (Figure 11). 

Notice, indeed, that a space group is a group of symmetry elements. If an atom is placed in a quite general position in the unit cell it is multiplied by the symmetry elements and thus other atoms, exactly equivalent to the first, are found at other positions precisely related to those of the first. Each space group has its own characteristic number of equivalent general positions. 

It should be remembered that when a reference atom is moved, all the atoms related to it by symmetry elements move also in a manner determined by the symmetry elements and the problem is to know, for any particular reflection, the direction in which to move the reference atom so that the contribution of the whole group of related atoms either increases or decreases. This problem is best solved by the use of charts which show at a glance the magnitude of the structure amplitude for such a group of atoms for all coordinates of the reference atom. 

The common characteristic of even these simplest of databases and of the most complex of their cousins is the concept of records. A record comprises the smallest collection of related data elements that is typically retrieved by a search. Again quoting the FDA Glossary, a record is a group of related data elements treated as a unit. Limiting factors are environmental influences that constrain the productivity of organisms, populations, or communities and thereby prevent them from achieving their full biological potential which could be realized under optimal conditions. The discoveries discussed in this chapter effectively revived Prout s hypothesis as well as the related notion of the unity of matter, two philosophical ideas discussed in chapter 2. The other main theoretical notion discussed in chapter 2, that of triads, also received a form of rehabihtation. The discovery of triads had given the very first hint that groups of three elements were related to each other. These relationships were not just in chemical similarities but were ako numerical, in that the atomic weight of one of the three elements in a triad was shown to be approximately the arithmetic mean of the weights of the other two.
