3 SYSTEMATIC ANALYSIS. GENERAL CONSIDERATIONS In this abbreviated course of qualitative analysis students should try to analyse dissolved samples provided by the teacher. In the present chapter it is assumed that a solution is to be analysed, which may contain the ions discussed in Section VIIL2. If it is felt desirable to carry out analyses of solid samples, the preliminary tests on and dissolution of the sample should be carried out according to Sections V.I to V.3 and V.5 to V.7. In such a case the preliminary tests described under Section VIII.4 need not be repeated, but the student may continue with Section VIII.5, always keeping in mind the results of the preliminary tests. [Pg.551]

Some teachers may prefer not to carry out a complete separation of cations, but to hand out separate unknown mixtures containing cations of one analytical group only. In this case precipitation is made of the particular group reagent (hydrochloric acid, hydrogen sulphide, ammonia, ammonium sulphide or ammonium carbonate) and the precipitate is examined by Group Separation Tables V. 12 to V. 19 as well as V.23 to V.28 for each group respectively. [Pg.552]


Many of the most important naturally occurring minerals and ores of the metallic elements are sulfides (p. 648), and the recovery of metals from these ores is of major importance. Other metal sulfides, though they do not occur in nature, can be synthesized by a variety of preparative methods, and many have important physical or chemical properties which have led to their industrial production. Again, the solubility relations of metal sulfides in aqueous solution form the basis of the most widely used scheme of elementary qualitative analysis. So how does this look in the chemical industry More so than in many other industries, investors generally accept that social and environmental issues can be financially significant in the chemical industry, but within traditional parameters. In the United States, data on Hg concentration in commercial fish are largely available from two sources (1) the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) study, which sampled fish that were intended for human consumption and which were landed in the United States in the early to mid-1970s (Hall et al. 1978) and (2) the U.S. Food and Drag Administration (FDA) sampling conducted in the early 1990s (FDA 1992). Both data bases represent samples of fish collected from landings and markets in various parts of the United States but do not identify the locations at which samples were obtained or sold. The NMFS data were collected more systematically, represent more species, and generally contain considerably more samples for each species than the FDA data. However, the FDA data are about 20 years more recent than the NMFS data. Both views have their own individual problems. Extensive sample purifications may result in uncontrolled sample losses together with unreasonably tedious and time-consuming procedures for routine analysis. In the second case, chromatography of relatively crude mixtures often leads to a decreased reliability of multicomponent analyses on a repetitive basis. If there is a generally acceptable middle course , GC will become considerably more popular in biochemical investigations than it has been thus far.
