Figure 2 shows an existing industrial flowsheet for the manufacture of the product and figure 3 shows the optimal flowsheet as generated by the synthesis software. The basic structure of the two flowsheets is the same but Jacaranda suggested the cell concentration step uses microfiltration instead of a centrifuge which is certainly a feasible option. Results for an intracellular product also produced similar flowsheets to those used in practice (Steffens et al 2000a).

The art of sound synthesis is as important for the electronic musician as the art of orchestration is for composers of symphonic music. Both arts deal with creating sonorities for musical composition. The main difference between them is that the former may also involve the creation of the instruments themselves. Those who desire to make their own virtual orchestra of electronic instruments and produce new original sounds will find this book very useful. It examines the functioning of a variety of synthesis techniques and illustrates how to turn a personal computer into a powerful and flexible sound synthesiser. The book also discusses a number of ongoing developments that may play an important role in the future of electronic music making, including the use of artificial intelligence techniques in synthesis software and parallel computers. 

It is possible to write VHDL code that the synthesizer cannot cope with. For example, relatively few synthesis tools can support division operations. Furthermore, some VHDL design styles are impossible for die synthesizer to analyse successfully. As time progresses, research into these issues means that the capabilities of the software ate continuously improving, but nonetheless substantia] limitations exist. It is a major aim of this book to communicate techniques that enable the writing of VHDL code that can readily be processed by logic synthesis software.

The use of test synthesis software lies outside the scope of this book, but we eagerly anticipate the arrival on die market of books devoted to this topic.
