Synthesis of adhesive

Furfural (1), derived from annually renewable agricultural byproducts, is an important industrial chemical manufactured and used throughout the world. It is the feedstock for a number of derivative chemicals generically known as furans -the structural characteristic of which is the five-membered oxygen-containing heterocyclic ring. Furfuryl alcohol (2) is the most important derivative of commerce, where it is used primarily in synthesis of adhesive polymers. [Pg.405]

Although rf-limoncnc is commonly analyzed by gas chromatography/mass spectroscopy (GC/MS), wet chemical analysis is still used for certain applications, particularly by the industries using citrus (/-limonene as a chemical starting material (e.g., for synthesis of adhesive resins). Values of some of the useful properties of crude (/-limonene are listed in Table 5.6. [Pg.180]

Each section of the turbulent device is calculated for optimal mode at various process productivities device 1 - up to 2.5 m /h of total liquid flow device 2-2,5-5 m /h and device 3 - 5-10 mVh. The proposed design is applicable for the synthesis of adhesion reducing powder over a wide range of process productivity (2.5-10 mVh). [Pg.270]

Over the last two decades, oligomers have thus become crucial to the development of the industrial synthesis of adhesives, lacquers, dyes, and coatings as well as to the formation of elastic or rigid components and structural parts. [Pg.527]

PBI is being marketed as a replacement for asbestos and as a high temperature filtration fabric with exceUent textile apparel properties. The synthesis of whoUy aromatic polybenzimidazoles with improved thermal stabUities was reported in 1961 (12). The Non-MetaUic Materials and Manufacturing Technology Division of the U.S. Air Force Materials Laboratory, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, awarded a contract to the Narmco Research and Development Division of the Whittaker Corp. for development of these materials into high temperature adhesives and laminates. [Pg.67]

A long-standing goal in polyolefins is the synthesis of polymers bearing polar functional groups such as acrylate, esters, or vinyl ethers, etc [24,40]. These copolymers might endow polyolefins with useful properties such as adhesiveness, dyeability, paintability, and print-ibility. Advances have recently been made in polymerizing polar monomers with cationic metallocene catalysts... [Pg.164]

Phenols occur widely throughout nature and also serve as intermediates in the industrial synthesis of products as diverse as adhesives and antiseptics. Phenol itself is a general disinfectant found in coal tar methyl salicylate is a flavoring agent found in oil of wintergreen and the urushiols are the allergenic constituents of poison oak and poison ivy. Note that the word phenol is the name both of the specific compound hydroxybenzene and of a class of compounds. [Pg.600]

In addition lo its use in making resins and adhesives, phenol is also the starting material for the synthesis of chlorinated phenols and the food preservatives BHT (butylated hvdroxytoiuene) and BHA (butylated bydroxyanisole). Penta-chlorophenol, a widely used wood preservative, is prepared by reaction of phenol with excess CI2- The herbicide 2,4-D (2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetjc acid) is prepared from 2,4-dichlorophenol, and the hospital antiseptic agent hexa-chlorophene is prepared from 2,4,5-trichlorophenol. [Pg.629]

Recently siloxane-imide copolymers have received specific attention due to various unique properties displayed by these materials which include fracture toughness, enhanced adhesion, improved dielectric properties, increased solubility, and excellent atomic oxygen resistance 1S3). The first report on the synthesis of poly(siloxane-imides) appeared in 1966, where PMDA (pyromellitic dianhydride) was reacted with an amine-terminated siloxane dimer and subsequently imidized 166>. Two years later, Greber 167) reported the synthesis of a series of poly(siloxane-imide) and poly(siloxane-ester-imide) copolymers using different siloxane backbones. However no physical characterization data were reported. [Pg.33]

Initially, the cytotoxicity against chick embryo fibroblasts of BPA, tyrosine, tyrosine dipeptide, and the dipeptide derivatives used in the synthesis of the polymers shown in Fig. 7 were evaluated in a comparative experiment (43). The surface of standard tissue culture wells was coated with 5 mg of each test substance. Then the adhesion and proliferation of the fibroblasts was followed over a 7-day period. Among all test substances, BPA was clearly the most cytotoxic material. Monomeric tyrosine derivatives containing the ben-zyloxycarbonyl group were also cytotoxic, while tyrosine itself, tyrosine dipeptide, and most of the protected dipeptide derivatives did not noticeably interfere with cell growth and adhesion and were therefore classified on a preliminary basis as possibly "nontoxic."... [Pg.222]

Gas-surface interactions and reactions on surfaces play a crucial role in many technologically important areas such as corrosion, adhesion, synthesis of new materials, electrochemistry and heterogeneous catalysis. This chapter aims to describe the interaction of gases with metal surfaces in terms of chemical bonding. Molecular orbital and band structure theory are the basic tools for this. We limit ourselves to metals. [Pg.215]

Andrianov and Zhdanov have developed a method for the synthesis of polymers containing heterochain and carbon-chain units by free-radical copolymerization of metal-containing polyorganosiloxanes bearing a pendant vinyl group with vinyl monomers. The copolymers thus obtained display increased thermal stability and can be used for the production of laminated plastics, adhesives and other valuable materials 53),... [Pg.119]

Further development in the area of alternate value-added products for improving economics included other oxygenated sulfur compounds [246,247], This invention included alkylated 2-(2-hydroxyphenyl) benzenesulfinic acid and 2-(2-hydroxyphenyl)-benzenesulfonic acid compounds and compositions which consist essentially of 2-(2-hydroxyphenyl) benzenesulfinic acid, 2-(2-hydroxyphenyl)-benzenesulfonic acid and/or substituted derivatives. The compositions are useful as hydrotropes and are also of use as, or as starting materials for, surfactants, and as starting materials for the synthesis of other useful chemicals such as, polymers and resins, solvents, adhesives, and biocides. [Pg.123]
