Sustainable growth, shift

Seizing the opportunities presented by that shift, as always, requires unique foresight and capabilities. Despite the turmoil in the economy in recent years, some nations have managed to increase their prosperity, advance the frontiers of science and learning, and build multiple kinds of new expertise. For them, the result today is an economy poised for sustained growth in traditional markets and robust growth in the new markets. 

Phosphoenolpyruvate, pyruvate, acetyl coenzyme A, and a number of amino acids involved in the biosynthesis of cyanogenic glycosides, alkaloids, glucosinolates, and antibiotics are linked to the final portion of the glycolytic sequence and immediately prior to entry into the Krebs cycle. Since 1971, the overall demand for isocyanates has increased at a compounded rate of 12%. Although this level will not likely be sustained in the future due to the maturation of key appHcation markets, it is probable that additional growth will occur through the year 2000. This trend will likely iaclude a shift in emphasis from TDl to MDl and polymeric MDl-based materials. New growth opportunities in the constmction industry, stmctural appHcations, and growth in the automotive industry exist. Third-world markets are also anticipated to provide growth opportunities. 

Shift from the goals of continuous growth to the goals of sustainable development... 

In principle, the crystallization of a protein, nucleic acid, or virus (as exemplified in Figure 2.2) is little different than the crystallization of conventional small molecules. Crystallization requires the gradual creation of a supersaturated solution of the macromolecule followed by spontaneous formation of crystal growth centers or nuclei. Once growth has commenced, emphasis shifts to maintenance of virtually invariant conditions so as to sustain continued ordered addition of single molecules, or perhaps ordered aggregates, to surfaces of the developing crystal. 

Numerous factors are responsible for the recent paradigm shift in the drug discovery and development process. First, and foremost, is the cost factor. The pharmaceutical industry can no longer sustain their former business model in the context of the exponential growth in costs associated with drug development as widely described by the investigators at Tufts University [1]. For more than 50 years, industrial chemistry has been based on coal, oil, and gas. Hence renewable resources have become less important, but shortage of resources, the greenhouse effect, growth of the world population, and the pursuit of sustainable development have awoken great interest in the energetic and substantial use of renewable resources in industry and research. A lower dependence on crude oil imports and raw material costs is currently accelerating the shift towards chemical products derived from renewable biological feedstocks. 

Determine if the CO shift reaction can serve as an energy-yielding step in darkness. If verified, this energy can be used to sustain cell growth and to induce new CO shift enzymes to support H2 production for a longer duration without the need for light input.
