As the pH of a suspension increases further, the potential decreases again, revealing another point of potential reversal at PZR 3. A careful analysis of the data indicated that the surface-induced adsorption of the molecular Al(OH)3 and the subsequent formation of the hydroxylated aluminum surface sites are responsible for the PZR 3 [44], Figure 11a is a scanning transmission electron micrograph of the cordierite core coated with the aluminum hydroxide layer of approximately 15 nm thickness. The uniform surface-induced coating of ultra-fine scale aluminum hydroxide was achieved by an excess addition of aluminum salt [e.g., A1(N03)3] to the suspension at a pH below the PZR 2 and... [Pg.183]

For possible consequences of drug-membrane interactions on conformation and/or orientation, see also Chapter 5. The examples discussed provide support for the assumption that the active conformation can be induced by the lipid environment. In other cases, however, inactivity may be related to such changes. Using NOE-NMR, changes in conformation have also been shown for verapamil in the presence of lipid-mimetic solvents such as acetonitrile [140] and for the binding of verapamil and verapamil analogs to amphiphilic surfaces (phospholipid-coated poly-styrene-divinylbenzene beads) [141]. [Pg.114]

A EXPERIMENTAL FIGURE 17-8 Vesicle buds can be visualized during in vitro budding reactions. When purified COPII coat components are incubated with isolated ER vesicles or artificial phospholipid vesicles (liposomes), polymerization of the coat proteins on the vesicle surface induces emergence of highly curved buds. In this electron micrograph of an in vitro budding reaction, note the distinct membrane coat, visible as a dark protein layer, present on the vesicle buds. [From K. Matsuoka etal., 1988, Ce//93(2) 263.[... [Pg.708]

Cut quartz crystals have characteristic modes of vibration that can be induced by painting electrodes on the opposite surfaces and applying a megaHertz ac voltage. The frequency is searched until the crystal goes into a resonance. The resonant frequency is very stable. It is a property of the material and maintains a value to a few parts per hundred million. When the surface is coated with a stiff mass, the frequency is altered. The shift in frequency is directly related to the surface mass for thin, stiff layers. The reaction of a substrate with this layer changes the constants of the film and further shifts the resonant frequency. These devices can be used in air, in vacuum, or in electrolyte solutions. [Pg.113]

Corrosion is mainly caused by oxides of sulfur but in certain parts of a combustion system, specifically on furnace wall tubes with metal temperature of 290 C-425°C (550°F-800°F) and superheater or reheater tubes with temperatures in the range 600 C-700°C (1110°F-1300°F), corrosion can be induced by tube deposits that destroy protective surface oxide coatings. [Pg.443]

Flexible spacers in the semirigid-rod molecule allow the molecule to orient with order parameter greater than 0.8 when coated and cured upon a rubbed polyimide layer. Kinetics of the photo-polymerization [62,63] and surface-induced orientation [49] as well as mechanical [64,65], optical [59,66,67], and ferroelectric properties [68-70] of the anisotropic networks were thoroughly examined. These investigations were mainly carried out by the Philip s research group and were applied to develop liquid crystalline display devices [58,69]. [Pg.300]
