Supports self-supporting rods

An important specialized type of voltammetric system is a self-contained cell for the determination of 02 in the gas or solution phases. This is the so-called Clark electrode,66,67 which consists of a platinum or gold electrode in the end of a support rod that is covered by an 02 permeable membrane (polyethylene or Teflon) such that a thin film of electrolyte is contained between the electrode surface and the membrane. A concentric tube provides the support for the membrane and the means to contain an electrolyte solution in contact with a silver-silver chloride reference electrode. The Clark device has found extensive application to monitor 02 partial pressure in blood, the atmosphere, and in sewage plants. By appropriate adjustment of the applied potential it gives a voltammetric current plateau that is directly proportional to the 02 partial pressure. The membrane material prevents interference from electroactive ions as well as from surface-contaminating biological materials. Figure 3.19 illustrates one configuration for this important device. [Pg.99]

The synthesis of self-supporting monolithic cylindrical rods ( lcmxlOcm) again with compositions and morphologies similar to resins has been reported [51]. These can also be prepared with a texture that allows each rod to be cleaved into discs. ( lcmx0.2cm, mass 250-500mg) (Fig. 1.10). The latter can be handled by a robot arm and soHd phase synthesis on one disc allows up to 0.5 mmole of a single compound to be produced. Similar disc and alternative shaped macroscopic supports have now been reported [52-54]. [Pg.12]

The entire cell assembly is supported by two large ceramic rods running left and right of the cell parallel to and on the same height as the ion beam. Auxilliary and support equipment, required to sustain the operation and not easily adapted to use in the explosive environment, was located in an equipment module (Figure 4) attached to the end of the shop and sufficiently isolated to preclude any hazard to operations conducted therein. The actual fuel elements in pressurized water reactors consist of individual fuel rods and control rod tubes mounted in a self-supporting construction of spacers fitted with a top and feet. Fuel elements for boiling water reactors, by comparison, have no control rod tubes, the fuel element zirkaloy claddings being used to guide the control rods and the coolant. [Pg.614]

In-situ Infrared study of DMC, MPC and DMPD syntheses DMC, MPC and DMPD syntheses were studied in an in situ IR cell which was capable of operating up to 30 MPa. The solid catalyst sample was pressed into a self-support disk and placed between two Cap2 rods in the transmission IR cell. Table 1 lists reaction conditions for these synthesis reactions.
