There have been several studies in which the flow patterns within the body of the cyclone separator have been modelled using a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) technique. A recent example is that of Slack et a/. 54 in which the computed three-dimensional flow fields have been plotted and compared with the results of experimental studies in which a backscatter laser Doppler anemometry system was used to measure flowfields. Agreement between the computed and experimental results was very good. When using very fine grid meshes, the existence of time-dependent vortices was identified. These had the potentiality of adversely affecting the separation efficiency, as well as leading to increased erosion at the walls.

Minor differences in the HPAC computations are found between experiments using the 3-km mesh and 9-km mesh MM5 data. This is likely due to the relatively smooth terrain of West Texas, such that its effects on the surface flow of the two scales are not very distinguishable. It appears that a 10-km grid mesh weather model would be adequate for an operational warning system over rural areas of relatively consistent terrain. However, this would probably not be the case in a rough urban setting, in which detailed urban terrain with substantial variations within a distance of 10 km must be considered. 

All simulations were run on a 1,000 X 1,000-grid mesh with a grid spacing of 7 nm, approximately a protein radius. Periodic boundary... 

Of considerably less commercial importance than the random or dumped packings are the oriented grids, meshes, wires, or coils. These range from inexpensive open-lattice metal stampings that stack 45° or 90° to each other and...
