Supervision familiarity

Prescription drug abuse has infiltrated current teen culture. PATS data revealed that 37 percent of teens say they have close friends who have abused prescription painkillers like Vicodin and OxyContin. Some 29 percent say the same about prescription stimulants Ritalin and Adderall . Average teens demonstrate a remarkable sophistication and knowledge when it comes to prescription (Rx) medications, which must be subscribed and supervised by a doctor, over-the-counter (OTC) medications, which are available for general purchase and use, and all other drugs. Teens are familiar with brand names of a wide variety of medications and can accurately describe their effects. [Pg.11]

Many loving parents probably instantly felt that alligators are a major concern. However, it could be that the real hazard was minimum supervision and shallow water. Countless young children unceremoniously drown, and little is said of that often preventable possibility. The National Safety Council stated that in 2000, 900 people drowned on home premises in swimming pools and in bathtubs. Of that number, 350 were children between newborn and 5 years old. [24] ABC News estimated that 50 young children drown in buckets each year, but we are familiar with buckets and do not see them as hazards. [25]... [Pg.5]

According to my experience, only several repeated experiments afford a serious appraisal. I also believe that at least one of these experiments should be undertaken in familiar surroundings (under discreet supervision of a trusted person) and with higher doses, OnJy then might the drug show us its, and our, deepest secret. [Pg.189]

There are a number of activities that may be seen as being not, or only indirectly, related to study conduct, or they may at least not be ascribable to any individual study. Qn the other hand, many of the activities and responsibilities of Quality Assurance are directly related to the supervision and control of specific studies. It is this latter interconnection of the work of Quality Assurance with the work of the Study Director and the study personnel that necessitates two important provisions for Quality Assurance personnel The independence from the study conduct, and the familiarity with the study procedures. [Pg.133]

Cherri had already unfastened her spacesuit collar when she felt the familiar minute perturbation in apparent gravity which meant Udat s distortion field was altering to open a wormhole interstice. "Very clever," she said sardonically to Mzu. "I hope to hell you know what you re doing. Bitek starships don t usually make swallows without their captain providing some supervision."... [Pg.127]

TM 9-1904 (cited previously) states, The safest and easiest way to destroy unusable ammunition is to dump at sea. The items disposed of in this manner must be of sufficient weight to sink to the ocean floor. Only at establishments located near a deep sea waterway is this method practicable. Port authorities must be consulted prior to taking explosive materials out to sea... Personnel supervising the loading of boats and barges should be familiar with army regulation no. 55-470. ... [Pg.80]

CGA G-1,5.1.4 29CFR1910.253(c)(5)(i) 4.5.41 Fuel gas and oxygen manifolds shall be installed under the supervision of someone familiar with the proper practices. [Pg.227]

Given the current information, it is advisable to limit use of blue cohosh in pregnancy only under the supervision of a practitioner who is familiar with its use and who can appropriately monitor both the mother and infant for possible adverse effects. Also see Adverse Events and Side Effects and Pharmacological Considerations for this entry. [Pg.180]

Several other changes are Ukely in the initial period of emplo3ment. The degree of supervision which a new employee receives will change, and how co-workers behave toward the new employee will change. These changes are partly associated with the development of familiarization, with adaption, and with trust development. Furthermore, these changes have safety implications and, as such, are discussed in Chap. 7. [Pg.6]

Once the process leaves the laboratory and is carried out at the pilot plant scale, it is essential to carry out a formal hazard assessment. The depth of investigation required depends on a variety of factors including scale, familiarity with the type of process and the level of competent supervision. [Pg.16]

Dr Mitchell, the newest member of staff involved, assumed for instance that chemotherapy for different routes of administration could never be on the ward at the same time. He also assumed that he was competent to supervise Dr North, and that Dr North was allowed to give these drugs under supervision. More rashly still, he assumed that Dr North was familiar with Mr James s case and so they did not need to consult his records. Dr North, in his turn, assumed that Dr Mitchell knew what he was doing and was authorized to supervise him. He also assumed that, although he should not have administered the drugs, it was permissible when authorized by Dr Mitchell. This assumptions made by each doctor were unfortunately perfectly matched, each tacitly reassuring the other of their mutual competence and the essential normality of the situation. [Pg.146]

Ductless fume hoods are ventilated enclosures that have their own fan, which draws air out of the hood and through filters and ultimately recirculates it into the laboratory. The filters are designed to trap vapors generated in the hood and exhaust "clean" air back into the laboratory. These hoods usually employ activated carbon filta-s. The collection efficiency of the filters decreases o er time. Ductless fume hoods have extremely limited applications and should be used only where the hazard is very low, where the access to the hood and the chemicals used in the hood are carefully controlled, and under the supervision of a laboratory supervisor who is familiar with the serious limitations and potentially hazardous characteristics of these devices. If these limitations cannot be accommodated, then this type of device should not be used. [Pg.186]

An effort must be made to return the employee to his/her customary job under the supervision of his/her usual supervisor this accommodation will best use the employee s prior work experience. The transition back to work will be less stressful because the tasks, personnel, and work area will be familiar. [Pg.784]

Additionally, some of the common causes of anesthesia errors are carelessness, haste and fatigue, emergency case, poor familiarity with anesthetic method, inadequate anesthesia-related experience, lack of skilled assistance or supervision, excessive reliance on other persoimel, failure to carry out a proper examination, visual field restriction, poor familiarity with equip-ment/device, teaching activity in progress, and poor communication with the surgical team or the laboratory personnel [10]. [Pg.124]

Provision of Technical Support Personnel skilled in the interpretation of criticality data and familiar with operations should be provided as advisors to supervision. [Pg.352]
