Dehydration - Methanol does not undergo dehydration reactions. Instead, in reaction with sulfuric acid the ester, dimethyl sulfate is formed. 

Meerwein s Ester (9) Dimethyl malonate (13.2 g, 0.4 mole) and 6 g of 40 % aqueous formaldehyde solution are mixed in an Erlenmeyer flask and cooled to 0° in an ice bath. To the mixture is added 0.3 g of piperidine and enough ethanol to produce a homogeneous solution. The solution is allowed to stand at 0° for 12 hours, at room temperature for 24 hours, and at 35 0° for 48 hours. The reaction product is washed with water (50 ml) followed by dilute sulfuric acid, then dried (sodium sulfate). Unreacted malonic ester is distilled off under vacuum leaving a residue of about 12.5 g, which contains methylenemalonic ester, methylenebismalonic ester, and hexacarbomethoxypentane.

Sulfuric acid can form ester derivatives with alcohols, though since it is a dibasic acid (pAla — 3, 2) it can form both mono- and di-esters. Thus, acid-catalysed reaction of methanol with sulfuric acid gives initially methyl hydrogen sulfate, and with a second mole of alcohol the diester dimethyl sulfate. Though not shown here, the mechanism will be analogous to the acid-catalysed formation of carboxylic acid esters (see Section 7.9). 

Acidolysis of cyclic sulfites with sulfuric acid and ester interchange with dimethyl sulfate produce cyclic sulfates (104).

With phenols, NaOH is a strong enough base and dimethyl sulfate, the dimethyl ester of sulfuric acid, is often used as the electrophile. These variations do not affect the mechanism. As long as we have a good nucleophile (here reactive RO-), a methyl electrophile, and a good leaving group (here an iodide or a sulfate anion), the S>j2 mechanism will work well. 

Transfer a 10-mL sample, previously dried with sodium sulfate, into a 125-mL glass-stoppered Erlenmeyer flask previously cooled in an ice bath. Add to the cooled oil 20 mL of dimethyl aniline (monomethyl-free), and mix thoroughly. To the mixture add 8 mL of acetyl chloride and 5 mL of acetic anhydride, cool for several min, permit to stand at room temperature for another 30 min, then immerse the flask in a water bath maintained at 40° 1° for 16 h. Wash the ace-tylated oil with three 75-mL portions of ice water, followed by successive washes with 25-mL portions of 5% sulfuric acid, until the separated acid layer no longer becomes cloudy or emits an odor of dimethyl aniline when made alkaline. After removal of the dimethyl aniline, wash the acetylated oil first with 10 mL of sodium carbonate TS and then with successive portions of water until the washings are neutral to litmus. Finally, dry the acetylated oil with anhydrous sodium sulfate, and proceed as directed for Ester Determination under Esters, this Appendix.
