Acid Gas-Separations

Most membrane dryers such as the Cactus Membrane Air Dryer line shown in Fig. 2.10 are marketed to OEMs and compressor and instrument distributors. 

These devices process filtered compressed air to deliver compressed air having dew points as low as —4-0°C at 10 atm. pressure. 

The high-pressure dryer has also found appHcation in high-pressure compressed air systems onboard US Navy vessels [61]. These dryers are typically operated between compressor stages at 30 to 70 bar pressures and the dry product returned to the next compression stage for final boost to the 200 to 330 bar receiver pressure.

Selective gas permeation has been known for generations, and the early use of p adium silver-alloy membranes achieved sporadic industrial use. Gas separation on a massive scale was used to separate from using porous (Knudsen flow) membranes. An upgrade of the membranes at Oak Ridge cost 1.5 billion. Polymeric membranes became economically viable about 1980, introducing the modern era of gas-separation membranes. Hg recoveiy was the first major apphcation, followed quickly by acid gas separation (CO9/CH4) and the production of No from air.

Control of the level in the acid/gas separator ensures an effective seal between the liquid handling parts of the sulphonation plant and the exhaust gas treatment section. Several methods can be used, but the one which minimizes the hold-up and residence time distribution of acids, and consequently dioxane formation during ether sulphate manufacture is based on control of a variable speed gear pump.
