Sulfur-mercury catalyst

From Acetylene. Although acetaldehyde has been produced commercially by the hydration of acetylene since 1916, this procedure has been almost completely replaced by the direct oxidation of ethylene. In the hydration process, high purity acetylene under a pressure of 103.4 kPa (15 psi) is passed into a vertical reactor containing a mercury catalyst dissolved in 18—25% sulfuric acid at 70—90°C (see Acetylene-DERIVED chemicals). [Pg.52]

Anthraquinone-l,5-disulfonic acid [117-14-6] (44), and anthraquinone-1, 8-disulfonic acid [82-48-4] (45) are produced from anthraquinone by disulfonation in oleum a higher concentration of SO than that used for 1-sulfonic acid is employed in the presence of mercury catalyst (64,65). After completion of sulfonation, 1,5-disulfonic acid is precipitated by addition of dilute sulfuric acid and separated. After clarification with charcoal, 1,5-disulfonic acid is precipitated as the sodium salt by addition of sodium chloride. The 1,8-disulfonic acid is isolated as the potassium salt from the sulfuric acid mother hquor by addition of potassium chloride solution. [Pg.313]

Natural gas contains both organic and inorganic sulfur compounds that must be removed to protect both the reforming and downstream methanol synthesis catalysts. Hydrodesulfurization across a cobalt or nickel molybdenum—zinc oxide fixed-bed sequence is the basis for an effective purification system. For high levels of sulfur, bulk removal in a Hquid absorption—stripping system followed by fixed-bed residual clean-up is more practical (see Sulfur REMOVAL AND RECOVERY). Chlorides and mercury may also be found in natural gas, particularly from offshore reservoirs. These poisons can be removed by activated alumina or carbon beds. [Pg.276]

Manufacture and Processing. Until World War II, phthaUc acid and, later, phthaUc anhydride, were manufactured primarily by Hquid-phase oxidation of suitable feedstocks. The favored method was BASF s oxidation of naphthalene [91-20-3] by sulfuric acid ia the presence of mercury salts to form the anhydride. This process was patented ia 1896. During World War I, a process to make phthaUc anhydride by the oxidation of naphthalene ia the vapor phase over a vanadium and molybdenum oxide catalyst was developed ia the United States (5). Essentially the same process was developed iadependendy ia Germany, with U.S. patents being granted ia 1930 and 1934 (6,7). [Pg.482]

Some natural gases have also been found to contain mercury, which is a reformer catalyst poison when present in sufftciendy large amounts. Activated carbon beds impregnated with sulfur have been found to be effective in removing this metal. [Pg.346]

Catalytic Oxidation. Catalytic oxidation is used only for gaseous streams because combustion reactions take place on the surface of the catalyst which otherwise would be covered by soHd material. Common catalysts are palladium [7440-05-3] and platinum [7440-06-4]. Because of the catalytic boost, operating temperatures and residence times are much lower which reduce operating costs. Catalysts in any treatment system are susceptible to poisoning (masking of or interference with the active sites). Catalysts can be poisoned or deactivated by sulfur, bismuth [7440-69-9] phosphoms [7723-14-0] arsenic, antimony, mercury, lead, zinc, tin [7440-31-5] or halogens (notably chlorine) platinum catalysts can tolerate sulfur compounds, but can be poisoned by chlorine. [Pg.168]

Strong dehydrating agents such as phosphorous pentoxide or sulfur trioxide convert chlorosulfuric acid to its anhydride, pyrosulfuryl chloride [7791-27-7] S20 Cl2. Analogous trisulfuryl compounds have been identified in mixtures with sulfur trioxide (3,19). When boiled in the presence of mercury salts or other catalysts, chlorosulfuric acid decomposes quantitatively to sulfuryl chloride and sulfuric acid. The reverse reaction has been claimed as a preparative method (20), but it appears to proceed only under special conditions. Metals in the platinum family are recognized for their ability to promote combustion at lowtemperatures. Other catalysts include various oxides of copper, chromium, vanadium, nickel, and cobalt. These catalysts are subject to poisoning, particularly from halogens, halogen and sulfur compounds, zinc, arsenic, lead, mercury, and particulates. It is therefore important that catalyst surfaces be clean and active to ensure optimum performance. [Pg.2190]

In catalytic incineration, there are limitations concerning the effluent streams to be treated. Waste gases with organic compound contents higher than 20% of LET (lower explosion limit) are not suitable, as the heat content released in the oxidation process increases the catalyst bed temperature above 650 °C. This is normally the maximum permissible temperature to which a catalyst bed can be continuously exposed. The problem is solved by dilution-, this method increases the furnace volume and hence the investment and operation costs. Concentrations between 2% and 20% of LET are optimal, The catalytic incinerator is not recommended without prefiltration for waste gases containing particulate matter or liquids which cannot be vaporized. The waste gas must not contain catalyst poisons, such as phosphorus, arsenic, antimony, lead, zinc, mercury, tin, sulfur, or iron oxide.(see Table 1.3.111... [Pg.1258]

The chemistry of alkynes is dominated by electrophilic addition reactions, similar to those of alkenes. Alkynes react with HBr and HC1 to yield vinylic halides and with Br2 and Cl2 to yield 1,2-dihalides (vicinal dihalides). Alkynes can be hydrated by reaction with aqueous sulfuric acid in the presence of mercury(ll) catalyst. The reaction leads to an intermediate enol that immediately isomerizes to yield a ketone tautomer. Since the addition reaction occurs with Markovnikov regiochemistry, a methyl ketone is produced from a terminal alkyne. Alternatively, hydroboration/oxidation of a terminal alkyne yields an aldehyde. [Pg.279]

The stereochemistry of electrochemical reduction of acetylenes is highly dependent upon the experimental conditions under which the electrolysis is carried out. Campbell and Young found many years ago that reduction of acetylenes in alcoholic sulfuric acid at a spongy nickel cathode produces cis-olefins in good yields 126>. It is very likely that this reduction involves a mechanism akin to catalytic hydrogenation, since the reduction does not take place at all at cathode substances, such as mercury, which are known to be poor hydrogenation catalysts. The reduction also probably involves the adsorbed acetylene as an intermediate, since olefins are not reduced at all under these conditions and since hydrogen evolution does not occur at the cathode until reduction of the acetylene is complete. Acetylenes may also be reduced to cis olefins in acidic media at a silver-palladium alloy cathode, 27>. [Pg.40]

Tetranuclear iron-sulfur clusters of the type [Fe4S4(SR)4]2, where R = CH2C6H5 and C6H5, were found138 to catalyze the reduction of C02 in DMF solutions. Controlled-potential electrolyses were carried out in a C02-saturated 0.1 M tetrabutylammonium tetrafluoroborate (TBAT)-DMF solution at a mercury pool cathode. In the absence of a catalyst, C02 was substantially reduced only at potentials more negative than -2.4 V versus SCE, while in the presence of a cluster, the reduction took place at around -1.7 V thus, potential shift of ca. 0.7 V was achieved. The products were analyzed by means of gas chromatography and isotachophoresis. Without a catalyst, oxalate was the main product, and addition of small amounts of water to the DMF solution favored formate production, whereas in the presence of the catalyst, formate was produced predominantly even in a dry DMF solution. This result was interpreted in terms of indirect reduction of C02, proceeding by electron transfer from the reduced cluster to C02 in the bulk... [Pg.374]

Acetaldehyde is the product of the Wacker process. At the end of the fifties oxidation of ethene to ethanal replaced the addition of water to acetylene, because the acetylene/coal-based chemistry became obsolete, and the ethene/petrochemistry entered the commercial organic chemicals scene. The acetylene route involved one of the oldest organometallics-mediated catalytic routes started up in the 1920s the catalyst system comprised mercury in sulfuric acid. Coordination of acetylene to mercury(II) activates it toward nucleophilic attack of water, but the reaction is slow and large reactor volumes of this toxic catalyst were needed. An equally slow related catalytic process, the zinc catalysed addition of carboxylic acids to acetylene, is still in use in paint manufacture. [Pg.320]

Similarly, pyridine can be 3-sulfonated with hot sulfuric acid, or oleum, if mercuric [mercury(II)] sulfate is present as a catalyst (Scheme 2.5). Treatment of quinoline with fuming sulfuric acid (30% S03) at 90 °C gives quinoline-8-sulfonic acid (17) in 54% yield with the 5- and 7-isomers as minor products. The quantity of 5-sulfonic acid (18) increases with reaction temperature and use of mercury or one of its salts as a catalyst in fuming sulfuric acid at 170 °C gives (18) as exclusive product. In the original German process acetylene is injected into an aqueous solution of mercuric sulfate acidified with sulfuric acid at 90-95°C and about 1-2 atm. As a result of side reactions, the catalytically active mercury(II) ions are reduced to mercury. To prevent this process ferric sulfate is continuously added to the reactor. Since ferric ions are reduced to ferrous ions, the catalyst solution requires reactivation, which is accomplished by hot nitric acid and air. Excess acetylene and acetaldehyde formed are removed, cooled, absorbed in water, and then separated by distillation. Excess acetylene is recycled. Conversion per pass is bout 55%. The Montecatini process89 operates at 85°C and provides 95% overall yield. A modification developed by Chisso90 allows lower operating temperature (70°C) without excess acetylene. Since side reactions are less important under these conditions, higher yields may be achieved. [Pg.290]
