Chemically synthesized antimicrobials used in animal and poultry feeds include arsenicals, eg, arsanilic acid [98-50-0] sodium arsanilate [127-85-5] and roxarsone [121-19-7]-, sulfa dmgs, eg, sulfadimethoxine [122-11-2], sulfamethazine [57-68-1], and sulfathiazole [72-14-0]-, carbadox [6804-07-5]-, and nitrofurans, eg, furazoHdone [67 5-8] and nitrofurazone [59-87-0] (see Antibacterial agents, synthetic Antiparasitic agents). [Pg.410]

A/ -HeterocycHc derivatives can be formed in some cases by a ring closure to give the heterocycle. Sulfadiazine, sulfamethazine, sulfamerazine, and sulfathiazole have been prepared in this fashion, but also by the usual procedure from the sulfonyl chloride and heterocycHc amine. The synthesis of sulfamethazine from sulfaguanidine is an example of the ring closure method. [Pg.468]

Test strip and immunoflltration devices were developed by Ostermaier et al to detect sulfadiazine, sulfamethazine, and sulfamethoxypyridazine in milk. Direct competitive immunoassay was utilized with sulfonamide-horseradish peroxidase as the detector. The LOD for sulfamethazine for both the dipstick and immunoflltration was 10 pg kg for sulfadiazine, the LOD was 12 pg kg for the dipstick and 30 pg kg for immunoflltration. For sulfamethoxypyridazine, the LOD was 10 pgkg for the dipstick and 20 pgkg for immunoflltration. The devices were found to be suitable for on-site use with undiluted milk. [Pg.704]

Lopez-Avila and Benedicto combined SEE with ELISA to determine sulfamethazine in powdered milk. Various conditions were tested in order to achieve quantitative extraction of sulfamethazine. Variations in extraction pressure, temperature, extraction period, and the presence of organic modifier resulted in extraction efficiencies of 0-92%. Once optimal extraction conditions had been developed, a commercially available ELISA was utilized to determine sulfamethazine concentrations. The LOD was 2.5 pgkg and satisfactory recoveries were obtained at levels from 5 to 15 pgkg-i. [Pg.704]
