Rotating-drum-type and belt-type heat-transfer equipment forms granular products directly from fluid pastes and melts without intermediate preforms. These processes are described in Sec. 5 as examples of indirect heat transfer to and from the solid phase. When solidification results from melt freezing, the operation is known as flaking. If evaporation occurs, solidification is by diying.

Sylvinite ore is relatively soft and easily broken. Thus, continuous miners of the boring- or rotating drum-type can be used. These machines are modified continuous coal miners. This method is used in some of the mines in New Mexico, in all Canadian mines except the solution mines, and in many European mines. Ore is removed from the face by a number of methods, eg, with extensible belt conveyor ore-loading machines and shutde cars to the main haulage line. To obtain maximum benefits from the continuous miners, the ore transport system must be as nearly continuous as possible. 

The horizontal reactor of the rotating drum type (Fig.8) does not have certain drawbacks characteristic of the vertical reactor. Particularly, rotating drums provide for a more thorough mixing of gaseous chlorine derivative with contact mass, because they increase the time of contact between the phases (10 times in comparison with the fluidised layer) consequently, the degree of chlorine derivative also grows. In the production of phenyl-chlorosilanes they create favourable conditions to increase the yield of di-phenyldichlorosilane.

Continuous rotary disk filter. This filter consists of concentric vertical disks mounted on a horizontal rotating shaft. The filter operates on the same principle as the vacuum rotary drum filter. Each disk is hollow and covered with a filter cloth and is partly submerged in the slurry. The cake is washed, dried, and scraped off when the disk is in the upper half of its rotation. Washing is less efficient than with a rotating drum type.
