An alternative approach is to create a reducible structure that deliberately includes redundant features and then subject this to optimization. Redundant features are then removed by the optimization. 

Structure defects decrease conductivity of the studied material, and then the intensity of the induced magnetic field is small and the signal received by the probe Hp is big (Fig.2). Low conductivity of austenite is a defects of the structure in case of residual austenite in the martensite structure, which with regard to the magnesite structure is as 1 5. Eddy currents produced in the studied area are subject to excitation in effect of small conductivity of austenite grains in the structure of the studied material. 

Classifier structures resulting from the training were verified in a blind test. To evaluate the reliability and performance of the NSC it was subjected to a blind test using unknown data containing spectra measured for various sizes and locations of the disbonds (from 50% to over 100% of the probe size). 

Neuronal networks are nowadays predominantly applied in classification tasks. Here, three kind of networks are tested First the backpropagation network is used, due to the fact that it is the most robust and common network. The other two networks which are considered within this study have special adapted architectures for classification tasks. The Learning Vector Quantization (LVQ) Network consists of a neuronal structure that represents the LVQ learning strategy. The Fuzzy Adaptive Resonance Theory (Fuzzy-ART) network is a sophisticated network with a very complex structure but a high performance on classification tasks. Overviews on this extensive subject are given in [2] and [6]. 

In recent years, advances in experimental capabilities have fueled a great deal of activity in the study of the electrified solid-liquid interface. This has been the subject of a recent workshop and review article [145] discussing structural characterization, interfacial dynamics and electrode materials. The field of surface chemistry has also received significant attention due to many surface-sensitive means to interrogate the molecular processes occurring at the electrode surface. Reviews by Hubbard [146, 147] and others [148] detail the progress. In this and the following section, we present only a brief summary of selected aspects of this field. 

The field emission microscope (FEM), invented in 1936 by Muller [59, 60], has provided major advances in the structural study of surfaces. The subject is highly developed and has been reviewed by several groups [2, 61, 62], and only a selective, introductory presentation is given here. Some aspects related to chemisorption are discussed in Chapter XVII. 

Micellar structure has been a subject of much discussion [104]. Early proposals for spherical [159] and lamellar [160] micelles may both have merit. A schematic of a spherical micelle and a unilamellar vesicle is shown in Fig. Xni-11. In addition to the most common spherical micelles, scattering and microscopy experiments have shown the existence of rodlike [161, 162], disklike [163], threadlike [132] and even quadmple-helix [164] structures. Lattice models (see Fig. XIII-12) by Leermakers and Scheutjens have confirmed and characterized the properties of spherical and membrane like micelles [165]. Similar analyses exist for micelles formed by diblock copolymers in a selective solvent [166]. Other shapes proposed include ellipsoidal [167] and a sphere-to-cylinder transition [168]. Fluorescence depolarization and NMR studies both point to a rather fluid micellar core consistent with the disorder implied by Fig. Xm-12. 

Many solids have foreign atoms or molecular groupings on their surfaces that are so tightly held that they do not really enter into adsorption-desorption equilibrium and so can be regarded as part of the surface structure. The partial surface oxidation of carbon blacks has been mentioned as having an important influence on their adsorptive behavior (Section X-3A) depending on conditions, the oxidized surface may be acidic or basic (see Ref. 61), and the surface pattern of the carbon rings may be affected [62]. As one other example, the chemical nature of the acidic sites of silica-alumina catalysts has been a subject of much discussion. The main question has been whether the sites represented Brpnsted (proton donor) or Lewis (electron-acceptor) acids. Hall... 

Although a separation of electronic and nuclear motion provides an important simplification and appealing qualitative model for chemistry, the electronic Sclirodinger equation is still fomiidable. Efforts to solve it approximately and apply these solutions to the study of spectroscopy, stmcture and chemical reactions fonn the subject of what is usually called electronic structure theory or quantum chemistry. The starting point for most calculations and the foundation of molecular orbital theory is the independent-particle approximation. 

Radiation probes such as neutrons, x-rays and visible light are used to see the structure of physical systems tlirough elastic scattering experunents. Inelastic scattering experiments measure both the structural and dynamical correlations that exist in a physical system. For a system which is in thennodynamic equilibrium, the molecular dynamics create spatio-temporal correlations which are the manifestation of themial fluctuations around the equilibrium state. For a condensed phase system, dynamical correlations are intimately linked to its structure. For systems in equilibrium, linear response tiieory is an appropriate framework to use to inquire on the spatio-temporal correlations resulting from thennodynamic fluctuations. Appropriate response and correlation functions emerge naturally in this framework, and the role of theory is to understand these correlation fiinctions from first principles. This is the subject of section A3.3.2. 

By subjecting boron nitride (a white powder) to high pressure and temperature small crystals of a substance harder than diamond, known as borazon, are obtained. This pressure-temperature treatment changes the structure from the original graphite-like layer structure (p. 163) to a diamond-like structure this hard form can withstand temperatures up to 2000 K.
