Subject quality improvement

Training programs are important in constracting and maintaining a quality improvement culture in the laboratory. Such programs should be extended to all members of the laboratory so that they are able to understand the quality principles and practices and the appropriate methods and techniques for quality improvement. Ginseng has been popular for more than 2000 years as a tonic for improved stamina and sense of well-being, particularly in the elderly. Although subjective quality of life reports substantiate this tradition, objective evidence of improved cognitive function and physical stamina remains incomplete or lacking. Further studies of standardized ginseng preparations will be necessary to clarify its use in fatigue and diabetes. 

Cinolazepam was evaluated in a doubleblind placebo controlled trial in 20 normal subjects. The subjects were given either placebo or 40 mg cinolazepam orally 30 min before bedtime. A significant improvement in sleep maintenance was obtained with 40 mg cinolazepam, measured by sleep disruption using nocturnal traffic noise. Sleep architecture was only minimally affected, and sleep quality improved significantly (65). 

Various literature reports are available concerning the chemical changes in fruits and vegetables during processing. Several chapters in this book will deal with this subject in depth. With the raise in consumer demand of quality products, more research funds are needed to investigate the chemistry of quality improvement of fruits and vegetables. 

In 33 patients with Parkinson s disease (mean age 63 years) who were taking a stable dosage of ropinirole in an immediate-release formulation, sleep disturbances improved or disappeared after they switched to a prolonged-release formulation, with improved subjective quality of sleep, reduced daytime sleepiness, and disappearance of sleep attacks [72 ]. The EIDOS and DoTS descriptions of sleep attacks due to dopamine receptor agonists are shown in Figure 4. 

User fees, often combined with waivers and exemptions, have been the subject of extensive debate in recent years, and several countries have decided to eliminate user tees all together. The introduction of user fees in the 1980s and 1990s was meant to increase funding and improve the quaiity of public health and education services. Unfortunately, the resulting additional funds have not always been reinvested in quality improvements, and the use of services by the poor decreased because they have not always been able to receive the necessary waivers. 

Products for use on the skin are designed to improve skin quality, to maintain (or restore) skin s youthful appearance, and to aid in alleviating the symptoms of minor diseases of the skin. Many of these products are subject to different regulations in different countries. Skin products are generally formulated for a specific consumer purpose. 

Compared with the natural material, raw SBR is more uniform in a variety of ways. Not only is it more uniform in quality so that compounds are more consistent in both processing and product properties but it is also more uniform in the sense that it usually contains fewer undesired contaminants. In addition, over a period of years it has been generally less subject to large price variations. These differences in uniformity have, however, tended to lessen with the advent of improved grades of natural rubber such as Standard Malaysian Rubber which have appeared in recent years. 

These are the characteristics which need to be specified and their achievement controlled, assured, improved, managed, and demonstrated. These are the characteristics which form the subject matter of the specified requirements referred to in ISO 9000. When the value of these characteristics is quantified or qualified they are termed quality requirements or requirements for quality. ISO 8402 1994 defines requirements for quality as an expression of the needs or their translation into a set of quantitatively or qualitatively stated requirements for the characteristics of an entity to enable its realization and examination. While rather verbose, this definition removes the confusion over quality requirements and technical requirements. (An additional definition is provided in Appendix A.) Technical requirements for a product or service are quality requirements. The requirements of ISO 9000 are quality system requirements. 

In brief, the auditor has to be qualified by lATF to perform the audits and, to be eligible for qualification, the auditor has to be sponsored by an lATF-approved certification body that is subject to witness audits performed by qualified auditors from vehicle manufacturers. Such measures will inevitably improve the quality of certification offered by certification bodies and will be good for the global automotive industry. 

Quality control tests or improvement of existing processes. Raw materials from various sources can be used in the manufacture of fine chemicals and pharmaceuticals. The raw materials can contain different impurities at various concentrations. Therefore, before the raw material is purchased and used in a full-scale batch its quality should be tested in a small-scale reactor. Existing full-scale procedures are subject to continuous modifications for troubleshooting and for improving process performance. Laboratory reactors used for tests of these two kinds are usually down-scaled reactors or reactors being a part of the full scale-reactor. 

The effect of raw material variability on tablet production [2,30,31] and suggestions for improving tableting quality of starting materials [21] has been the subject of several publications. Table 3, which lists the characteristics of different sources of magnesium stearate, clearly illustrates the variability of this material [32].
