It must be stressed that factors such as the hydration (or solvation) of the metal ion and anion effects on the extracted complex often make it difficult to predict the order of extractability for such systems. Such factors may even influence the stoichiometry of the extracted species. Thus, the simple match of the metal to the whole concept is only of limited utility. For example, potassium, rubidium and sodium nitrates are extracted in the presence of dibenzo-18-crown-6 (2) as 1 1 1 complexes. On the other hand, cesium forms a 1 2 1 sandwich complex with this crown (metal crown nitrate) in the organic phase and this affects the extraction order for the above metal ions, with the order being dependent on ligand concentration. In contrast, for picrate as the anion the composition of the extracted cesium complex is 1 1 1 (Fig. 4.8) [27]. [Pg.90]

The reaction front typically grows well beyond the voids so they become imbedded in the reaction product. As was the case for impurity snowplowing, the greater the amount of reaction product, the greater the void volume. Fig. 35 depicts Kirkendall voids that formed in the Ni-Sn system with a high-Sn, lead-free solder. The unreacted Ni is void-free, while there are numerous voids in the Ni3 n4 reaction product. These voids usually form close to a reaction interface, reducing the interfacial area but not necessarily the interfadal strength. Fig. 32 shows the effect of the voids on the properties of intermetallic compounds. The cross-sectional area of the intermetallics is reduced and the presence of voids results in a stress concentration at void surfaces [116]. Sufficient tensile stress. Sufficiency here is difficult to define since it depends on a number of factors such as alloy composition, concentration of corrodent, and temperature. In some cases, stresses near the jdeld strength of the metal are necessary. In other cases, the stresses can be much lower. However, for each combination of environment and alloy system, there appears to be a threshold stress below which SCC will not occur. In order to ensure the destruction of pathogens, the process of chlorination must achieve certain control of at least one factor and, preferably two, to compensate for fluctuations that occur. When designing sewer networks, particularly gravity sewers, reaeration is the major process that should be focused on to reduce sulfide formation and the formation of organic odorous substances (cf. Section 4.4). A number of hydraulic and systems characteristics can be managed to increase the reaeration rate and avoid or reduce sulfide-related problems. The hydraulic mean depth, the hydraulic radius, the wastewater flow velocity and the slope of the sewer pipe are, in this respect, important factors that are dealt with in Section 4.4. It should be stressed that it is not necessarily the objective to avoid sulfide formation (in the sewer biofilm), but the sulfide that occurs in the bulk water phase should be at a low concentration level.
