Material Balances Material balance constraints are in the form of equalities. There are three types of such constraints fixed plant yield, fixed blends or splits, and unrestricted balances. Except in some special situations, such as planned shutdown of the plant or storage movements, the right hand-side of the balance constraints is always zero. The Aspirator.—Since the closely packed absorption vessels offer a resistance equivalent to several centimetres of water to the gas stream there must be sufficient pressure at the junction of the constricted part of the combustion tube with the calcium chloride tube to overcome this resistance when the absorption apparatus is opened. But to create this pressure would seriously endanger the quantitative determination of the products of combustion because the high concentration of these set up at this point would increase the possibility of leakage. The most effective remedy consists in maintaining within the junction a pressure as near as possible to the atmospheric pressure. The temperature of molten polymer process streams is commonly measured using a thermocouple positioned through a transfer line wall and partially immersed in the polymer stream. Process stream temperature measurements that use an exposed-tip thermocouple, however, can be misleading since the temperature of the thermocouple junction is a balance between the heat transferred from the polymer stream and from the thermocouple assembly [39]. Due to the low heat transfer rate between the polymer and the exposed tip and the high thermal conductivity of the thermocouple sheath, the temperatures measured can be different by up to 35°C depending on conditions. Extrudate temperatures, however, can be accurately measured using a preheated, handheld thermocouple probe. This method minimizes thermal conduction through the probe sheath. [Pg.126]

Carrier-gas is transferred from the column through a heated metal capillary, which minimizes the dead volume at the end of the column and prevents condensation of the column effluent prior to its entry into the scrubbing unit.
