Storage grain elevators

In most parts of the world, except India, safflower seed is handled in bulk. In Califomia this is accomplished in large aluminum-sided, bottom-dumping, open-top truck trailers of approximately 10-121 capacity each, two of which are hauled in tandem to a field by a truck tractor unit. The trailers are left by the field to be filled by the farmer, and the tractor unit returns and hauls the full trailers directly to the oil mill or export terminal (in some cases up to 250 km away) or to a closer grain elevator for intermediate storage. In other parts of the United States, safflower is delivered in many types of grain trucking equipment and much of it is delivered to small country elevators where it is stored, cleaned if necessary, and subsequently loaded onto trucks or railroad hopper cars (which can hold between 50 and 701 of safflower seed) for delivery to a buyer. [Pg.1150]

Accidental or uncontrolled explosions can have disastrous effects. Spectacular explosions of various types gain widespread attention. One of the most notable was the space shuttle Challenger explosion on live television in 1986. Others are grain elevator explosions and explosions of railroad tank cars and storage vessels containing liquid petroleum gas (LPG) and other materials. Although the visible effects appear similar, the phenomena are not exactly alike. [Pg.247]

This example showed that the ALA composition cannot really be accurately predicted in LowLin canola by NIR. However, the NIR technique is still useful for such analyses, since it can segregate the canola seeds into high, medium and low, based on their ALA content. This is very useful at the grain elevator level where bin storage has to be decided in minutes upon delivery. It is also a very useful tool for breeders who need to analyse thousands of samples every year in their programme. However, the technique is of limited use to determine the ALA content of a sample when a precise and accurate result is needed, such as a nutrition study for example. [Pg.140]

For a coarse-grained (particle containing) graphite, the system depicted in Figure 1 is typical. The nin-of-kiln coke is brought in on railroad cars and emptied into pits where the coke is conveyed to an elevator. The elevator feeds a second conveyor that empties the coke into any one of a number of storage silos where the coke is kept dry. The manufacturer usually specifies a maximum moisture content in the incoming coke at about 0.1—0.2% to ensure that mix compositions are not altered by fluctuations in moisture content. [Pg.501]

Herbicides reduce transportation and storage costs. A good example of the transportation and storage costs of weed seeds was given by a Canadian weed scientist ( 1). He reported that despite herbicide usage and grain-cleaning processes, 33 railroad carloads of weed seeds are transported across Canada from elevators to ports each day. [Pg.46]
