Silo storage

A space large enough for an employee to enter and work with restricted activities or movement may have a hazardous atmosphere. The incident occurs because of failure of recognizing the hazards associated with confined spaces. The different kinds of confined spaces for a worker in a plant are tanks, silos, storage bins, vessels, hoppers, pits, and sewer lines. Big fermenters, multieffective evaporators, boilers, and wells are also included in this list. 

Calcium hydroxide is a product new to the market. There have been, in past, positive scientific reports of its usefulness. The benefits of calcium hydroxide over calcium carbonate are its functionality, particle shape (more spherical and thus less abrasive to the equipment) (Figure 2.18), its lower density (decreases the density of product and lowers the price), a refractive index closer to many polymers, and its lower cost (approximately half of the price of calcium carbonate). The manufacturing equipment includes an excitement chamber, metered conveying, pneumatic transportation, flash drying, classification, and silo storage. The manufacturer delivers product to customers by its own silo-trucks.

Pungent brown fumes which cause lung irritation after a delay of a few hours. Occurs in explosions and blasting, silo storage and diesel engine exhaust. 

Water absorption by cement, especially if the latter has a high C3A content, furthermore causes retardation of setting (because of diminished reactivity of the C3A) and, depending on how much water is absorbed, also causes loss of strength (in consequence of pre-hydration of the C3S in the cement). Besides, false set - temporary early stiffening of the cement when mixed with water - may also be due to causes associated with silo storage (see Section V.3). 

The foundation of the cask or silo storage area shall be capable of withstanding the load of the full containers and the handling equipment without excessive settling, which could lead to canister instability. 

The cask, silo storage area or vault shall be designed so that casks, silos or vaults are placed, constructed in place or maintained in a manner which permits adequate heat dissipation. Design features might include provisions to maintain the effectiveness of cooling mechanisms during adverse weather conditions.
