Storage under dry nitrogen is also recommended since it limits flammability hazards as well as minimizing water pickup. [Pg.263]

After the Second World War, the expansion of the petroleum refining and chemical process industries far outstripped that of the rest of the manufacturing industries. The chemical industry also was different than the older established industries due to the nature of toxic and flammable liquids and gases. [12] Naturally, the handling and storage of hazardous materials presented a potential peril that was often far greater than those posed by the traditional industries. [Pg.4]

Fire barriers, described in Table 6-8, should be used to separate special hazards within those warehouses that require segregation from the general storage. Flammable liquids, organic peroxide formulations and aerosols are examples of materials which may require this special segregation. [Pg.90]

You will also note that the flammable hazard classification of a chemical determines the allowable containersize for a chemical. Thus, Class lA or HC 1 are only allowed up to 0.5 L in size for a glass container (most laboratories use glass). There is also a limit as to the amount of flammables allowed outside a flammable storage cabinet at any one time. This is very important for your safety, so when you are finished using a flammable you should promptly return it to the flammables cabinet. This reduces your risk in case there is a Are. [Pg.503]

Storage Rules Hazards of some materials increase if they come into contact with other materials. For example, a fire involving flammable materials will greatly intensify in the presence of an oxidizer other than air. Some chemicals will react violently when mixed with water or other materials. The layout in pharmacies should provide easy cleaning, sufficient lighting, separated product flows and dedicated areas (products to be dispensed, products to be delivered, products to be returned, products suspected of falsification and damaged products). Also dedicated areas for hazardous products such as medicinal gases, combustibles, flammable liquids and solids. The storage of hazardous products above a certain limit have specific requirements for the premises e.g. Facilities with blow off roofs. [Pg.803]

The National Fire Protection Association [5] (NFPA) has developed a color-coded number system called NFPA 704 (Figure 14.2). It uses a color-coded diamond with four quadrants in which numbers are used in the upper three quadrants to signal the degree of health hazard (blue), flammability hazard (red), and reactivity hazard (yellow). The bottom quadrant is used to indicate special hazards. The NFPA system alerts the personnel about the degree of hazard of the chemical. It also draws attention to storage needs and required emergency equipment. [Pg.378]

Most storage containers for ciyogens are designed for a 10 percent ullage volume. The latter permits reasonable vaporization of the contents due to heat leak without incurring too rapid a buildup of the pressure in the container. This, in turn, permits closure of the container for short periods of time to either avoid partial loss of the contents or to transport flammable or hazardous ciyogens safely from one location to another. [Pg.1136]
