Steroid Antibiotics. The steroid antibiotics are a stmcturaHy diverse class of steroids that have a common biological function, ie, antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, or antitumor activities. This group of compounds can overlap with other steroid classes Hsted above. Eusidic acid [6990-06-3] (67), helvohc acid [29400-42-8] (68), and cephalosporin [13258-72-5] (69) exemplify a set of antibacterial steroids that contain a prolanostane skeleton with an... [Pg.424]

There are hundreds of topical steroid preparations that are available for the treatment of skin diseases. In addition to their aforementioned antiinflammatory effects, topical steroids also exert their effects by vasoconstriction of the capillaries in the superficial dermis and by reduction of cellular mitosis and cell proliferation especially in the basal cell layer of the skin. In addition to the aforementioned systemic side effects, topical steroids can have adverse local effects. Chronic treatment with topical corticosteroids may increase the risk of bacterial and fungal infections. A combination steroid and antibacterial agent can be used to combat this problem. Additional local side effects that can be caused by extended use of topical steroids are epidermal atrophy, acne, glaucoma and cataracts (thus the weakest concentrations should be used in and around the eyes), pigmentation problems, hypertrichosis, allergic contact dermatitis, perioral dermatitis, and granuloma gluteale infantum (251). [Pg.446]

Pharmacologically useful isoxazoles (B-82MI41600) include antibacterial sulfonamides (614), (615) and (616), semisynthetic penicillins (617), (618), (619) and (620), semisynthetic cephalosporin (621), anabolic steroid (622), the monoamine oxidase inhibitor (623) (used in psychotherapy), antiinflammatory agent (624) and antitumor agent (625). [Pg.127]

Antibacterial agents, vaccines and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) may all lead to anaphylactic shock if the patient is allergic to these products. [Pg.299]

Blepharitis is a topical inflammation of the eyelid margins that should be treated using topical antibacterial agents. Gentamicin eye ointment is preferred to the fusidic acid drops since the ointment is a better formulation to be used where the condition involves the eyelid margins. Chloramphenicol eye drops is the third option since it is an antibiotic with a wider spectrum of activity. A combination of corticosteroid and antibiotic is not recommended because of the side-effects associated with the steroid. The use of oral tablets is not usually recommended since blepharitis can easily be managed with topical drops. The use of dexamethasone eye drops, monotherapy steroid, could clear the inflammation but mask persistence of infection. [Pg.341]

During synthesis of the hormone rf-aldosterone, 20,21-dihydroxy-lip,18-epoxy-5a-pregnan-3-one diacetate was oxidised to the 3-oxo acid by stoich. RuOy CCl [78, 79], Oxidation of a substituted pyrrolidine to a pyroglutamate, part of the total synthesis of the antibiotic biphenomycin B, was effected by RuO /aq. Na(lO )/ EtOAc [102], Oxidation of a number of A-5 steroids to enones was effected by RuClj/TBHP/cyclohexane [391] safety aspects of these large-scale reactions were examined, as in the preparation of the antibacterial squalamine [186],... [Pg.25]

Antibiotics can be administered either systemic or topical as monotherapy or part of a corticoid-steroid combination. Antibacterial therapy leads not only to reduction of bacterial colonization, but also in many cases to improvement of AE, even when not actively infected 83,84... [Pg.398]

Among new applications [192,193] attention has been focused on the biocompatible, bioactive, and biodegradable properties. Dopamine and several enzymes, e.g., trypsine, have been covalently bound to polyphos-phazene chain. AJso anestisics, steroids, and antibacterial agents may be linked to polyphosphazene with promising pharmaceutical applications. [Pg.737]

Polymyxin B is not used systemically because of its neurotoxicity and nephrotoxicity. Topically, it is used in combination with other antibacterial drugs or steroids to prevent and treat skin infections and external otitis. [Pg.186]
