Steel importance

In 1979, there were 168 blast furnaces in the United States, most located in Pittsburgh and Chicago, and these produced ca 8 x 10 t of pig iron. By 1992, most of the blast furnaces in the Pittsburgh area had disappeared. Only 44 blast furnaces were operating in the United States, producing ca 4.7 x lO t of pig iron. The drop in pig iron production can be attributed to decreased and more efficient use of steel products, competition from steel imports, and rapid growth of scrap-based steelmaking. [Pg.412]

In tenns of an electrochemical treatment, passivation of a surface represents a significant deviation from ideal electrode behaviour. As mentioned above, for a metal immersed in an electrolyte, the conditions can be such as predicted by the Pourbaix diagram that fonnation of a second-phase film—usually an insoluble surface oxide film—is favoured compared with dissolution (solvation) of the oxidized anion. Depending on the quality of the oxide film, the fonnation of a surface layer can retard further dissolution and virtually stop it after some time. Such surface layers are called passive films. The best replacement for borosilicate glassware is stainless steel. Stainless steel takes the heat, won t break, and, most importantly, is about as resistant to chemical degradation as the chemist can hope to find. For those items that won t be subjected to direct heat there can be some steel/metal or steel/plastic hybrids. In figure 3 is shown how flasks of any size can be made with two stainless steel mixing bowls welded together. Also shown is the vacuum adaptor and condenser. In unalloyed steel containers formamide discolors slowly during shipment and storage. Both copper and brass are also subject to corrosion, particularly in the presence of water. Lead is less readily attacked. Aluminum and stainless steel are resistant to attack by formamide and should be used for shipping and storage containers where the color of the product is important or when metallic impurities must be minimized. Formamide attacks natural mbber but not neoprene. As a result of the solvent action of formamide, most protective paints and finishes are unsatisfactory when in contact with formamide. Therefore, formamide is best shipped in containers made of stainless steel or in dmms made of, or coated with, polyethylene. Formamide supphed by BASF is packed in Lupolen dmms (230 kg) or Lupolen canisters (60 kg) both in continental Europe and overseas. [Pg.509]
