Staggered joints

Masonry blocks of lightweight blast-furnace slag (used as coarse aggregate) are sometimes used. These units are laid-up with thin staggered joints not more than Xin (0.8 cm) thick. Joints should use only fire-resistant mortar. 

Staggered joint lateral circumferential direction for both lateral and forward traction. Grooves tend to be larger and deeper, with the rib walls angled to prevent stone retention. 

Double Layer Pipe expansion is a significant factor at tenmera-tures above 600°F (3I6°C). Above this temperature, insiilation should be apphed in a double layer with all joints staggered to prevent excessive heat loss and high surface temperature at joints opened by pipe expansion. This procedure also minimizes thermal stresses in the insulation. 

Traditional cold store construction was to build an insulated lining within a masonry shell. The outer skin would be erected in brick and concrete, and rendered as smooth as possible inside with cement plaster, to take the insulation. When the surface was dry, it would have several coats of bitumen applied as a vapour barrier and slabs of insulation material stuck to this with hot bitumen. This was normally carried out in two or more layers so that joints did not pass right through the insulant, but were staggered. The inner skin would be finished with cement plaster, reinforced with wire mesh. The usual insulant was slab cork. 

Using computer modeling, jointly with x-ray fiber diffraction data, the molecular architectures of two different gel-forming polysaccharides have been examined. Preliminary results indicate that the neutral and doubly branched capsular polysaccharide from Rhizobium trifolii can form a 2-fold single helix of pitch 1.96 nm or a half-staggered, 4-fold doublehelix of pitch 3.92 nm. The molecules are likely to be stabilized by main chain — side chain interactions. 

In livestock, selenium has been found to be the cause of blind staggers and alkali disease. Blind staggers occurs as a result of acute ingestion of seleniferous plants and is characterized by impaired vision, depressed appetite, a tendency to wander in circles, paralysis, and death from respiratory failure. A more chronic syndrome described in horses and livestock is alkali disease, which also is associated with consumption of grains or plants containing selenium. The disease is characterized by lack of vitality, loss of appetite, emaciation, deformed hoofs, loss of hair, erosion of the joints of long bones, anemia, cirrhosis, and cardiac atrophy ...

A moment s reflection will tell the reader why this is stronger. If the bottom joint of the wall is on top of the floor, it is possible for this joint to fail and the wall to slide inward or for the joint to crack open and wall to fall in. If, on the other hand, the joints are staggered-by placing either a "split" or a "double" as the bottom brick on the wall and laying the floor inside this, we have removed the joint from the fulcrum of the lever.
