Spurting

For more serious cuts, where bleeding is profuse, apply pressure with a thick sterile (or at least clean) pad, dressing, or towel over the area. If an arteiy is spurting, try to minimise bleeding by applying pressure immediately above and below the cut. 

The functions of the bulb in the inlet tube C are to reduce the danger of spurting and also the sucking back of the liquid in A the latter can be prevented by the timely opening of the screw chp on E. 

Pulp-like olefin fibers are produced by a high pressure spurting process developed by Hercules Inc. and Solvay, Inc. Polypropylene or polyethylene is dissolved in volatile solvents at high temperature and pressure. After the solution is released, the solvent is volatilised, and the polymer expands into a highly fluffed, pulp-like product. Additives are included to modify the surface characteristics of the pulp. Uses include felted fabrics, substitution in whole or in part for wood pulp in papermaking, and replacement of asbestos in reinforcing appHcations (56). 

Nylon-6,6 [32131 -17-2] and nylon-6 [25038-54-4] continue to be the most popular types, accounting for approximately 90% of nylon use. There are a number of different nylons commercially available Table 1 gives a summary of the properties of the more common types. In the 1990s there has been a spurt of new polyamide iatroductions designed for higher temperatures, better stiffness and strength, and/or lower moisture uptake.

The addition of 2,4-pentanedione to liquid ammonia is a highly exothermic process. Also, ammonia vapor reacts with the /3-diketone to produce an insoluble ammonium salt, which tends to clog the tip of the addition funnel. Cooling the reaction mixture in dry ice-acetone reduces the vigor of the reaction and minimizes the dogging of the addition funnel. The 2,4-pentanedione should be added in spurts which fall on the surface of the reaction mixture rather than on the wall of the flask... 

The influence of selectivity in the initiation, termination or chain transfer steps on the distribution of monomer units within the copolymer chain is usually neglected. Galbraith et a .u provided the first detailed analysis of these factors. They applied Monte Carlo simulation to examine the influence of the initiation and termination steps on the compositional heterogeneity and molecular weight distribution of binary and ternary copolymers. Spurting et a/.250 extended this... 

In the vitamin D deficiency disease rickets, the bones of children are undermineralized as a result of poor absorption of calcium. Similar problems occur in adolescents who are deficient during their growth spurt. Osteomalacia in adults results from demineralization of bone in women who have little exposure to sunlight, often after several pregnancies. Although vitamin D is essential for prevention and treatment of osteomalacia in the elderly, there is little evidence that it is beneficial in treating osteoporosis. 

Results from a large-scale, high-temperature, high-pressure simulator were compared with laboratory data, and significant differences in spurt loss values were found [1125]. 

A fluid loss additive is described [1849] that helps achieve a desired fracture geometry by lowering the spurt loss and leak-off rate of the fracturing fluid into the surrounding formation by rapidly forming a filter-cake with low permeability. The fluid loss additive is readily degraded after the completion... 

Prior to 40 years of age, the prostate in the adult male stays the same size, approximately 15 to 20 g. However, in males who have reached 40 years of age, the prostate undergoes a growth spurt, which continues as the male advances in age. Enlargement of the prostate can result in BPH.

Malononitrile can be distilled in small amounts (50 cc. or so) at ordinary pressure the boiling point is around 220°. However, the longer heating necessary with larger amounts is apt to cause violent decomposition. In such a case the liquid darkens, boils spontaneously, and finally spurts from the flask in a cloud of white fumes and burning liquid the latter partially solidifies to a brittle red solid. 

The end of the reaction can be readily detected by the bubbling and spurting which take the place of the quiet boiling. If the mixture is not fairly thick, less sulfuric acid should be used in the next run. If it is solid, more acid should be used. 

For the most part, the resting pH of the stomach is nearer to 2 than 1 however, during feeding the meal causes a transient rise in pH to 4—5 depending on the volume and nature of the meal consumed.
