Results from a large-scale, high-temperature, high-pressure simulator were compared with laboratory data, and significant differences in spurt loss values were found [1125]. 

A fluid loss additive is described [1849] that helps achieve a desired fracture geometry by lowering the spurt loss and leak-off rate of the fracturing fluid into the surrounding formation by rapidly forming a filter-cake with low permeability. The fluid loss additive is readily degraded after the completion... 

Figure 33 shows the time dependence of the volume of static filtrate collected from a typical water-based drilling fluid. The initial volume collected at time f = 0 is termed the spurt loss and represents the uncontrolled flow of filtrate and fine solids into the filter medium the spurt loss continues until a filter cake forms on the surface of the filter medium. 

Loss by decrepitation and spurting during this operation must be avoided. 

To prevent loss by spurting, Davis (J. Amer. Ghem, Soc., 23, 487) has suggested that the fat or oil should be added to a previously dried and tared coil of filter paper contained in a stoppered weighing bottle, which is then placed in the oven and dried at 100° G. until constant in weight. Of course, this method is not applicable to oils or fats liable to oxidation on heating.
