Tests on vehicles have shown that the volatility index as defined expresses satisfactorily the fuel contribution during hot operation of the engine (Le Breton, 1984). In France, specifications stipulate that its value be limited to 900, 1000 and 1150, respectively, according to the season (summer, spring/fall, winter). The automobile manufacturers, being even more demanding, require in their own specifications that the FVI not be exceeded by 850 in summer. 

We begin the mathematical analysis of the model, by considering the forces acting on one of the beads. It should be borne in mind that the lipid index cannot characterize the food supply over the whole annual cycle, but only that in the period when lipids are accumulated rather than consumed. For warm-water fish of the southern European seas, this is the summer and autumn, while for cold-water fish such as the Black Sea and Mediteranean sprat, it is spring and summer. The food...

In a French study, late cultivars (e.g., Violet de Rennes ) produced more total biomass than early cultivars (e.g., Blanc precoce ), but tuber yields were the same. The superior leaf area index of late cultivars could not be translated into superior tuber yields due to constraints on the life cycle as a result of unfavorable fall climatic conditions (Barloy, 1988b). Planting early in the spring ensures a longer growing season. In Southern Europe, this equates to February and not later than March. Later plantings result in reduced yields.
