Tests on vehicles have shown that the volatility index as defined expresses satisfactorily the fuel contribution during hot operation of the engine (Le Breton, 1984). In France, specifications stipulate that its value be limited to 900, 1000 and 1150, respectively, according to the season (summer, spring/fall, winter). The automobile manufacturers, being even more demanding, require in their own specifications that the FVI not be exceeded by 850 in summer. [Pg.191]

We begin the mathematical analysis of the model, by considering the forces acting on one of the beads. If the sample is subject to stress in only one direction, it is sufficient to set up a one-dimensional problem and examine the components of force, velocity, and displacement in the direction of the stress. We assume this to be the z direction. The subchains and their associated beads and springs are indexed from 1 to N we focus attention on the ith. The absolute coordinates of the beads do not concern us, only their displacements. [Pg.185]

After the spin is completed, the clip assembly is removed holding it in one hand and exerting a slight downward pressure on the slide with the index finger. The spring is released with the other hand and tilted to remove chamber. [Pg.408]

K being the leaf-spring constant) and by starting measurements with the surfaces far apart, where F(D) = 0, force profiles may be determined. The method also allows the measurement of the mean refractive index n(D) of the medium between the surfaces (9), and from this the amount r of adsorbed species per unit area of mica may be evaluated. Finally the mean radius of curvature R of the cylindrically curved mica surfaces near the contact area may also be calculated from the shape of the interference fringes. [Pg.229]

The Academie Royale des Sciences was established in 1666 with fifteen members but no classes or sections. See Maurice Crosland, "The French Academy of Sciences in the Nineteenth Century," Minerva 16 (Spring 1978) 73102, on 75 and Oeuvres de Lavoisier, IV (Paris Imprimerie nationale, 1868) 559. A useful source for the Academy is the Index biographique de l Academie des Sciences, 16661978 (Paris Gauthier-Vi liars, 1979), and for the Academy in the nineteenth century, Maurice Crosland, Science Under Control The French Academy of Sciences 17951914 (Cambridge Cambridge University Press, 1992). [Pg.58]

Running economy, an index of the contribution to performance made by the springs, the Achilles tendon and the arch of the foot, was better in the Kenyans. [Pg.302]

When the delay indicator on the fuze body is rotated to some arming delay mark, the index lock pin must be pushed inward in order to release the index ring. If delay time of less than 6-sec is desired, the stop screw must be removed prior to selecting an arming time. The striker assembly, contg a steel ball, spring, and firing... [Pg.973]

Glucose and sucrose in condensed milk (these sugars are not found in raw milk) diluted with phosphate buffer can be measured using analysers made by Yellow Springs Instrument Co. (www.ysi.com/index.html). [Pg.671]

It should be borne in mind that the lipid index cannot characterize the food supply over the whole annual cycle, but only that in the period when lipids are accumulated rather than consumed. For warm-water fish of the southern European seas, this is the summer and autumn, while for cold-water fish such as the Black Sea and Mediteranean sprat, it is spring and summer. The food... [Pg.207]

In anisotropic materials, the electronic bonds may have different polarizabilities for different directions (you may think of different, orientation-dependent spring constants for the electronic harmonic oscillator). Remembering that only the E-vector of the light interacts with the electrons, we may use polarized light to test the polarizability of the material in different directions, lno is one of the most important electro-optic materials and we use it as an example. The common notations are shown in Figure 4.7. If the E-vector is in plane with the surface of the crystal, the wave is called a te wave. In this example, the te wave would experience the ordinary index na of LiNbOs (nG 2.20). If we rotate the polarization by 90°, the E-ve ctor will be vertical to the surface and the wave is called tm. In lno, it will experience the extraordinary index ne 2.29. Therefore these two differently polarized waves will propagate with different phase velocities v c/n. In the example of Figure 4.7, the te mode is faster than the tm mode. [Pg.84]

In a French study, late cultivars (e.g., Violet de Rennes ) produced more total biomass than early cultivars (e.g., Blanc precoce ), but tuber yields were the same. The superior leaf area index of late cultivars could not be translated into superior tuber yields due to constraints on the life cycle as a result of unfavorable fall climatic conditions (Barloy, 1988b). Planting early in the spring ensures a longer growing season. In Southern Europe, this equates to February and not later than March. Later plantings result in reduced yields. [Pg.340]
